Benjamini asked whether the scenery reconstruction problem can be solved using only polynomially many observations. In this article, we answer his question in the affirmative for an i.i.d. uniformly colored scenery on Z observed along a random walk path with bounded jumps. We assume the random walk is recurrent, can reach every integer with positive probability, and the number of possible single steps for the random walk exceeds the number of colors. For infinitely many l, we prove that a finite ...

Andrew Hart, Heinrich Matzinger,
A scenery is a coloring ξ of the integers. Let (S(t))t≥0 be a recurrent random walk on the integers. Observing the scenery ξ along the path of this random walk, one sees the color ξ(S(t)) at time t. The scenery reconstruction problem is concerned with trying to retrieve the scenery ξ, given only the sequence of observations χ≔(ξ(S(t)))t≥0. Russel Lyons and Yuval Peres have both posed the question of whether two-color sceneries can be reconstructed when the observations are corrupted by random errors. ...

We consider a random walk in random scenery {Xn=η(S0)+⋯+η(Sn),n∈N}, where a centered walk {Sn,n∈N} is independent of the scenery {η(x),x∈Zd}, consisting of symmetric i.i.d. with tail distribution P(η(x)>t)∼exp(−cαtα), with 1⩽α ny} for y>0, and n large. In this note, we show that the large deviation estimate is of order exp(−c(ny)a), with a=α/(α+1). Soit une marche aléatoire en paysage aléatoire Xn=η(S0)+⋯+η(Sn). We show that the scenery reconstruction problem on the Boolean hypercube is in general impossible. This is done by using locally biased functions, in which every vertex has a constant fraction of neighbors colored by $1$, and locally stable functions, in which every vertex has a constant fraction of neighbors colored by its own color. Our methods are constructive, and also give super-polynomial lower bounds on the number of locally biased and locally stable functions. We further show similar results ...

Matthias Loewe, Heinrich Matzinger, Franz Merkl,
Kesten noticed that the scenery reconstruction method proposed by Matzinger in his PhD thesis relies heavily on the skip-free property of the random walk. He asked if one can still reconstruct an i.i.d. scenery seen along the path of a non-skip-free random walk. In this article, we positively answer this question. We prove that if there are enough colors and if the random walk is recurrent with at most bounded jumps, and if it can reach every integer, then one can almost surely reconstruct almost ...

For a one-dimensional random walk in random scenery (RWRS) on Z, we determine its quenched weak limits by applying Strassen's functional law of iterated logarithm. As a consequence, conditioned on the random scenery, the one dimensional RWRS does not converge in law, in contrast with the multi-dimensional case.

In this paper we give a survey of some recent results for random walk in random scenery (RWRS). On $\Z^d$, $d\geq 1$, we are given a random walk with i.i.d. increments and a random scenery with i.i.d. components. The walk and the scenery are assumed to be independent. RWRS is the random process where time is indexed by $\Z$, and at each unit of time both the step taken by the walk and the scenery value at the site that is visited are registered. We collect various results that classify the ergodic behavior ...

We consider Sinai’s walk in i.i.d. random scenery and focus our attention on a conjecture of Révész concerning the upper limits of Sinai’s walk in random scenery when the scenery is bounded from above. A close study of the competition between the concentration property for Sinai’s walk and negative values for the scenery enables us to prove that the conjecture is true if the scenery has “thin” negative tails and is false otherwise.

Serguei Popov, Angélica Pachón,
We study the problem of scenery reconstruction in arbitrary dimension using observations registered in boxes of size k (for k fixed), seen along a branching random walk. We prove that, using a large enough k for almost all the realizations of the branching random walk, almost all sceneries can be reconstructed up to equivalence.

Localization of ground mobile robots in orchards is a complex problem which is yet to be fully addressed. The typical localization approaches are not adjusted to the characteristics of the orchard environment, especially the homogeneous scenery. To alleviate these difficulties, we propose to use top-view images of the orchard acquired in real-time. The top-view observation of the orchard provides a unique signature of every tree formed by the shape of its canopy. This practically changes the homogeneity ...

Let ξ = (ξk)k∈Z be i.i.d. with P(ξk = 0) = P(ξk = 1) = 1/2, and let S: = (Sk)k∈N0 be a symmetric random walk with holding on Z, independent of ξ. We consider the scenery ξ observed along the random walk path S, namely, the process (χk := ξSk)k∈N0. With high probability, we reconstruct the color and the length of blockn, a block in ξ of length ≥ n close to the origin, given only the observations (χk)k∈[0,2·33n]. We find stopping times that stop the random walker with high probability at particular places of the scenery, ...
