Abstract The present study investigated the potential benefits of extended exposure to captioned videos for second language pronunciation. We tested 90 L2 adult learners of English on speech processing skills (segmentation, speed of lexical access, and sentence processing) and phonological accuracy in perception (ABX discrimination) and production (accentedness ratings) before and after an 8-week treatment consisting of regular exposure to audiovisual materials. Participants were randomly assigned ...

This study examines the conception of heritage—holistic or traditional—among future early-childhood and primary teachers. In order to do this, our objective was to analyze trainee teachers’ perceptions surrounding the conception of heritage. To carry out the analysis, we designed and validated a questionnaire with closed-ended questions (Likert scale 1–5) and one open-ended question about the elements that respondents considered to be part of what we define as heritage. The participants (n = 602) study ...

Abstract Rationale, aims, and objectives Patients with somatoform disorders are frequent attenders in primary and secondary care. While co‐morbid mental disorders, especially depression and anxiety, are frequently present, there is controversy on whether mental co‐morbidity leads to higher health care utilization (HCU) . The present paper investigates the influence of co‐morbid depressive and anxiety disorders on primary, specialized somatic and mental HCU in primary care patients with somatoform disorders. ...

Background: Persistent somatic symptoms (PSS), referred to as somatoform disorders and lately somatic symptom disorders, are frequent but often remain under-recognized and under-treated. Although European guidelines overlap, presumably, there is large diversity in their practical use and in the actual health care situation. The aim of this qualitative evaluation was to compare health care for PSS across 9 European countries, to illustrate commonalities and differences, and to discuss challenges for ...

Stepped, collaborative, and coordinated approaches have been proposed as the optimal treatment strategy for somatic symptom and related disorders, but evidence supporting this strategy is lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a guideline-based health care network for patients who are at high risk of somatoform disorder (Sofu-Net).In a controlled, prospective, observer-blinded cluster cohort study, patients who were at high risk of somatoform disorder were recruited at ...

This article, the first column for this issue's Policy and Advocacy department, features a discussion about a recent experience in a graduate program in Medellín, Colombia introducing students to critical literacy. Graduate students used ideas from critical literacy to engage in an in-depth analysis of textbooks they had used in their practice. Their reflexivity showed that they raised questions about teachers' attachment to textbooks, the meaning of critical consciousness, issues of ideology in ...

This article is concerned with Extreme Case Formulations (ECFs) (Edwards, 2000; Pomerantz, 1986) in multiple-party TV programmes in two different languages: Spanish and English. Evidence of early occupations by hunter-gatherers in diverse tropical forests is increasing the world over (e.g. Gorman 1971; Pavlides & Gosden 1994), even in America (Roosevelt et al. 1996). This paper reports them in northern South America. Several lines of evidence suggest that many kinds of forests, some or all without modern analogues, existed in the American tropics during glacial times and remained there, with changing composition, until the present. According to evidence presented here, human ...

Abstract The development of new agricultural techniques made possible the intensive use of reduced areas, at the same time maintaining a dynamic equilibrium between environmental degradation and the needs of the inhabitants. This process has been documented for an 800‐year period at Araracuara, in the tropical rain forest of the Colombian Amazon. The stability of occupation is examined through the most important changes in anthropic soil formation and cultivated plants.

The author of this volume is well known for his view that mental illness is a "myth," arrived at through biased attitudes and objectionable methods used by society toward some of its nonconforming members. Such a viewpoint has elicited much controversy. In this new book, Dr. Szasz pushes his argument further, this time along historical lines. In the first part, he defends the thesis that today's mentally ill are identified and treated— or mistreated—in a way similar to the alleged witches in the ...

Abstract This article documents the current research efforts of a research team at a Colombian university to explore the new forms of literacies in second languages in the city. The different research projects from this research team aim to break the social imaginaries, often perpetuated in policies, that people in cities are not using English as a literacy resource and that all policies must, therefore, bring second languages to them. The findings from our studies portray a narrative that is far ...

The position of the mental foramen (MF) is particularly relevant in dentistry. The incorporation of new imaging techniques, such as cone-beam-computed tomography (CBCT), can be used to identify anatomic dimorphic traits. Aims: This study evaluated the sexual dimorphism of MF position by CBCT among a selected population.Fifty CBCT images from 20 to 40-year-old subjects (25 men and 25 women) were evaluated. The horizontal position was evaluated using the al Jasser-Nwoku classification to identify the ...
