Women killing somebody else, especially when that somebody is male, has fascinated criminologists, lawyers, psychologists, and writers. Fascinated and frightened them. Fear is subtext of Jones's book: the fears of men who, even as they shape society, are desperately afraid of women, and so have fashioned a world in which women come and go only in certain rooms; and . .. fears of those women who, finding rooms too narrow and door still locked, lie in wait or set place afire.2 Or kill.
