Oil palm cultivation has environmental impacts, including those associated with nitrogen (N) losses. Improving management practices to optimise yield and N losses is critical. In order to identify the key management and site parameters driving yield and N losses, over a 25-year cycle, we undertook a Morris's sensitivity analysis of the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator oil palm model (APSIM-Oil palm), using 3 sites in Papua New Guinea. We selected 12 parameters and 3 outputs: yield, nitrous ...

The conversion of grassland to oil palm is expected to increase throughout tropical regions where oil palm grows. Given the extent of land use change, there are concerns associated with impacts on ecosystem function and nutrient cycling. For this work, soil samples were collected in Papua New Guinea from 15 sites with oil palm (planted on grassland) and adjacent remnant grassland. Using DNA-based approaches, bacterial and fungal community composition was assessed in each sample, along with abundance ...

Abstract Oil palm ( Elaeis guineensis Jacq. ) crops are expanding rapidly in the tropics, with implications for the global carbon cycle. Little is currently known about soil organic carbon ( SOC ) dynamics following conversion to oil palm and virtually nothing for conversion of grassland. We measured changes in SOC stocks following conversion of tropical grassland to oil palm plantations in Papua New Guinea using a chronosequence of plantations planted over a 25‐year period. We further used carbon isotopes ...

Oil palm has become one of the most important crops in the world with questions being raised about its economic and environmental sustainability. Agricultural systems models are regularly employed in studying sustainable crop management but no detailed model is currently available for oil palm systems. We developed a production systems model for oil palm within the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) framework and tested it using data across a range of environments within Papua New ...

Abstract An unprecedented increase in oil palm developments may be underway in Papua New Guinea (PNG) through controversial “special agricultural and business leases” (SABLs) covering over two million hectares. Oil palm development can create societal benefits, but doubt has been raised about whether the SABL developers intend establishing plantations. Here, we examine the development objectives of these proposals through an assessment of their land suitability, developer experience and capacity, and ...

Field experiments in Papua New Guinea have shown strong effects of fertilizer type and placement on soil acidification in oil palm plantations—a potential degradation issue that may eventually have an adverse effect on yields. However, measurements at four sites in Indonesia show that relatively high yields are possible on soils with a low pH, and that best management practices can actually increase pH at low values. It is concluded that current pH levels in major growing areas of oil palm in Southeast ...

Nitrogen (N) fertiliser is an important and expensive input to oil palm in Papua New Guinea. Of about 3000 mm/year of rainfall, about 1300 mm is lost as evaporation. This leaves an excess of >1000 mm/year lost as surface runoff and/or deep drainage, and with it the potential for N loss. Approximately 11% of rainfall reached the ground as stem flow. Throughfall was generally lowest near the trunk and highest where canopies overlapped, but random spatial variability was large. The difference between ...

Impacts of palm oil industry expansion on biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions might be mitigated if future plantings replace grassland rather than forest. However, the trajectory of soil fertility following planting of oil palm on grasslands is unknown. We assessed the changes in fertility of sandy volcanic ash soils (0–0.15 m depth) in the first 25 years following conversion of grassland to oil palm in smallholder blocks in Papua New Guinea, using a paired-site approach (nine sites). There ...

Nitrogen fertiliser is an expensive input to oil palm in Papua New Guinea, and prone to leaching due to the about 3000 mm/year of rainfall. Transfer function theory is used to describe this leaching, and to devise ways of reducing it. Four variants of a leaching experiment were conducted at 2 sites to parameterise and check the theory. The experiment involved the application of ammonium chloride to an area of 25 m2, and then from 6 days to 5 months later taking soil samples at 200-mm intervals down ...

Abstract Background and Aims To sustainably manage N in oil palm systems quantities of N fixed by cover legumes need to be understood. Current values are scarce, based on shoot N measures and do not include litter which releases nitrate as it decomposes. We aimed to quantify N 2 fixed by legumes under oil palm systems in PNG and to determine if soil nitrate influenced dependence on N 2 fixation (Ndfa). Methods The ureide technique for estimating tropical legume Ndfa was calibrated for Calapogonium ...
