Electro-optic staring sensors, which sample a scene with pixels of finite size, generate images that are affected by aliasing and blurring caused by the sampling process. One potential method to reduce the effects of sampling is microscanning. In the microscan process, multiple images of the scene are generated. Between each successive image, the location of the image on the detector array is moved a fraction of a pixel. The set of images produced in the microscan process are then combined to form ...

U.S. output has expanded only slowly since the recession trough in 2009, even though the unemployment rate has essentially returned to a precrisis, normal level. We use a growth-accounting decomposition to explore explanations for the output shortfall, giving full treatment to cyclical effects that, given the depth of the recession, should have implied unusually fast growth. We find that the growth shortfall has almost entirely reflected two factors: the slow growth of total factor productivity, ...

This paper examines the macroeconomic dynamics of the 2007–09 recession in the United States and the subsequent slow recovery. Using a dynamic factor model with 200 variables, we reach three main conclusions. First, although many of the events of the 2007–09 collapse were unprecedented, their net effect was to produce macro shocks that were larger versions of shocks previously experienced, to which the economy responded in a historically predictable way. Second, the shocks that produced the recession ...

Comments Gerald Carlino and Ingrid Gould Ellen Gerald Carlino: It is well documented that income inequality has increased in the United States over the past three decades. For example, the variance of the log household income distribution increased nearly 25 percent between 1970 and 2000.1 Affluent and poor households also have become more geographically segregated in the United States over the past three decades.2 More importantly, there is evidence that concentration by income has increased in ...

A fundamental study of curses from a literary point of view. First the author differentiates the various types of curses found in ancient poetry; this is followed by a chronological examination of the curses, from archaic and classical Greece to Hellenistic and Roman times. The rich Hellenistic material is treated in particular detail, by placing it in its literary context and in relation to defixiones .
