ABSTRACT Nine morphologically distinct halophilic yeasts were isolated from Makgadikgadi and Sua pans, as pristine and extreme environments in Botswana. Screening for biosurfactant production showed that Rhodotorula mucilaginosa SP6 and Debaryomyces hansenii MK9 exhibited the highest biosurfactant activity using Xanthocercis zambesiaca seed powder as a novel and alternative inexpensive carbon substrate. Chemical characterization of the purified biosurfactants by Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy ...

Despite advances in anti-retroviral therapy which has transformed HIV/AIDS from a fatal to a manageable chronic disease, increasing viral drug resistance, side effects and uneven access to anti-retroviral drugs remain considerable therapeutic challenges. Partly as a consequence of these shortcomings and partly based on the fact that HIV/AIDS gives rise to opportunistic infections whose symptoms have been managed in Africa in an HIV/AIDS-independent context by traditional healers for centuries, many ...

This study was aimed to determine the extent to which Prosopis species had invaded four settlements (Bokspits, Rappelspan, Vaalhoek and Struizendam) located in the Kgalagadi Desert south west of Botswana, investigate the perceptions of the communities about the existence of the species in their environment and assess possible control options for the spread of Prosopis plants in the area. Prosopis plants were sampled in 42 quadrats of 625 m2 along a 70 km Prosopis invasion gradient from Struizendam ...

The composition of the non-polar extracts of the leaves, stem bark and twigs of Mundulea sericea (Fabaceae) were analyzed using GC-MS. Eight, five and eleven components were identified from the leaves, twigs and stem bark extract, respectively. The major components were identified as: caryophyllene (43.6 %) and cadina-3,9-diene (29.7 %) in the leaf extract, amorphene (34.4 %) and valencene (17.9 %) in the stem bark extract and isoledene (29.0 %) and -gurjunene (22.4 %) from the twig extract. Sesquiterpenes were the major ...

The Curculionid weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder & Sands, has been established on Salvinia molesta (salvinia) in Botswana. The study determined the intensity of weevil activity on the weed at the margin and the centre of four selected sites on the Khwai system of the Okavango Delta. Random samples of salvinia were collected from each site at monthly intervals in 1998 to extract weevils and to demonstrate the effect of weevil on the weed. The rate at which the weed was controlled at different sites ...

Harpagophytum is bitypic and native to Southern Africa. Its two species are Harpagophytum procumbens and H. zeyheri . H. procumbens is medicinal. A reliable method of identifying the species is through its fruit. However, distinguishing between H. procumbens and H. zeyheri can be difficult because of the various morphotypes. Hence, possibilities of introgression are hypothesized. The objective of this study was to test for interspecific introgression between the two species. Diagnostic characters ...

The concentration of the metal ions Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, Fe, Cr, Ni, and Pb were determined in water samples of the Okavango Delta's panhandle Maunachira-Khwai water system during periods of high (June 2004) and low (November 2004) water flow. The concentrations of Na (1.67 to 12.77 mg/L), K (1.37 to 5.80 mg/L), Ca (2.46 to 6.98 mg/L) and Mg (0.69 to 2.83 mg/L) increased with distance from Mohembo indicating concentration of these metal ions by evaporation. Cu (up to 0.028 mg/1), Co (up to 0.053 ...

Tubers of the xerophytic African plant Harpagophytum procumbens are used as an appreciated medicinal drug whereas the value of H. zeyheri remains uncertain. Due to large and sometimes continuous morphological variation, discrimination between these two species can be difficult. In addition, interspecific hybridization may occur and could further complicate the collection of proper plant material for medicinal purposes. Hence the objectives of this study were to 1) study the content of selected secondary ...

Harpagophytum , Devil’s Claw, is a genus of tuberiferous xerophytic plants native to southern Africa. Some of the taxa are appreciated for their medicinal effects and have been traditionally used to relieve symptoms of inflammation. The objectives of this pilot study were to investigate the antioxidant capacity and the content of total phenols, verbascoside, isoverbascoside, and selected iridoids, as well as to investigate the capacity of various Harpagophytum taxa in suppressing respiratory burst ...

Mozambique continues to face many challenges in HIV and maternal and child health care (MCH). Community-based antiretroviral treatment groups (CAG) enhance retention to care among members, but whether such benefits extend to their families and to MCH remains unclear. In 2011 we studied utilization of HIV and MCH services among CAG members and their family aggregates in Changara, Mozambique, through a mixed-method assessment. We systematically revised all patient-held health cards from CAG members ...

The increasing occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the environment, food and healthcare systems is a global public health concern. MRSA is reported to cause food poisoning, osteomyelitis and pyogenic infections of the skin, and consequently has been categorized as a high-priority pathogen by the World Health Organization. Here, we determined the presence of MRSA in clinical ( n =56), food ( n =150) and housefly samples ( n =970) collected from two hospitals in Botswana. Characterization ...

Appropriate medical and ethical conduct of traditional healers is often questioned by experts in the biomedical field. The absence of efficacy proofs and perceived inappropriate dosage measures are cited as reasons for doubting the authenticity of traditional medical practice. The main objective of the study was to analyse patient care processes, the monitoring of treatment adherence and health outcomes by traditional healers including management of side effects. A participatory/exploratory study ...

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand the perceptions and attitudes of community members towards traditional medicines, including their safety, authenticity and efficacy. Methodology: A participatory exploratory study design was chosen, combined with a multiple approach to data collection and analysis using consultative and report-back workshops, individual interviews and focus-group discussions. Findings: Eighty-four per cent of the community members felt that traditional medicines ...

Abstract Background Grewia flava infusions are consumed to assist with kidney problems and stomach ailments. However, there are no scientific data on the phytochemical profile or biological properties to validate its folklore use. Thus, the study aimed to assess the phytochemical profile, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of Grewia flava twig extracts. Methodology The antioxidant activities of the extracts were assayed using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging, reducing power, ...

Mopane tree (Colophospermum mopane) is one of the main ecological niches of Cryptococcus neoformans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes cryptococcosis primarily on immunocompromised hosts after inhalation of basidiospores from the environment. Hence, we investigated the prevalence, and phenotypically (antifungal resistance and biofilm formation capacity) and genotypically (mating type and genetic structure) characterized C. neoformans isolated from C. mopane, Acacia tortilis, Adansonia digitata ...
