The emeralds occur in a zone of intensely folded shale beds and intercalated thin calcite veins of the Villeta formation (Cretaceous). Mineralization is related to deep-seated igneous Tertiary intrusions. There may be some genetic relationship with salt beds and domes in the formation.

A S WE KNOW, rapid decline in aboriginal Lpopulation of Indies resulting from Spanish occupation alarmed authorities. Though government attempted to halt it by means of a long series of legal measures, these evidently had little effect. Chroniclers and informants, for their part, tried to explain away decline with a theory, that is, epidemics which periodically descended on New World and particularly affected Indians. Even today many authors subscribe to plague theory. One declared recently that ...

Introduction:A recent meta-analysis suggested that patients with non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose primary tumors have a higher standardized uptake value (SUV) derived from 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) have a worse prognosis in comparison with those with tumors with lower values. However, previous analyses have had methodological weaknesses. Furthermore, the prognostic significance over the full range of SUV values in patients treated nonsurgically remains unclear. ...

During a survey of carnivores and omnivores for bovine tuberculosis conducted in Michigan (USA) since 1996, Mycobacterium bovis was cultured from lymph nodes pooled from six coyotes (Canis latrans) (four adult female, two adult male), two adult male raccoons (Procyon lotor), one adult male red fox (Vulpes vulpes), and one 1.5-yr-old male black bear (Ursus americanus). One adult, male bobcat (Felis rufus) with histologic lesions suggestive of tuberculosis was negative on culture but positive for organisms ...

Smallholders control an important portion of forestlands in the Ecuadorian Amazon.Timber is not the main source of income but contributes to complement relatively diversified livelihood strategies of smallholders.Timber extraction is stimulated by a vigorous network of intermediaries linked to the end-markets in the cities. Most small-scale operations are undertaken informally since smallholders require complying with still cumbersome procedures in spite of state efforts for simplifying the forestry ...

Crack extension of mixed-mode in concrete is studied by applying the acoustic emission (AE) and the boundary element method (BEM). The theory of AE wave motions is briefly reviewed, including the historical development. AE waveforms are generated as elastic waves in concrete due to crack nucleation, and can be synthesized by the integral formulation, consisting of the spatial derivatives of Green's functions, the moment tensor, and the source-time function. Kinematics of cracks are represented by ...

Downregulation of the alveolar macrophage (AM) receptor with collagenous structure (MARCO) leads to susceptibility to postinfluenza bacterial pneumonia, a major cause of morbidity and mortality. We sought to determine whether immunomodulation of MARCO could improve host defense and resistance to secondary bacterial pneumonia. RNAseq analysis identified a striking increase in MARCO expression between days 9 and 11 after influenza infection and indicated important roles for Akt and Nrf2 in MARCO recovery. ...

The following article introduces the concept of "dilution" to show that the emergence of narcotics-trafficking and the territorial advance of paramilitarism in Colombia did not imply a total collapse or complete replacement of the traditional oligarchies. Instead, the events followed three different paths: the first was found in the big cities, where the capital from drugs and the armed conflict did not affect the relative wealth of the traditional oligarchies. The second was found in the intermediate ...
