The mating sign that each drone leaves when mating with a queen essentially consists of mucus gland proteins. We employed a Representational Difference Analysis (RDA) methodology to identify genes that are differentially expressed in mucus glands during sexual maturation of drones. The RDA library for mucus glands of newly emerged drones was more complex than that of 8 day-old drones, with matches to 20 predicted genes. Another 26 reads matched to the Apis genome but not to any predicted gene. Since ...

The incidence of chronic nosocomial infections by gram-positive bacteria has drastically increased during the last years in association with the more frequent use of in-dwelling medical devices (1, 2). Infections derived from the use of invasive methods, e.g., catheters, are mainly due to staphylococci, especially those strains which produce an extracellular slime and constitute a biofilm, making clinical treatment extremely difficult (4, 5, 7, 9-12). The biofilm development process requires polysaccharidic ...

A total of 1785 Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates were collected in our hospital during 1998 (526), 1999 (564) and 2000 (695). Among them, one hundred and thirty (39, 33 and 58, respectively) were phenotypically assigned as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA); sixteen of these isolates (3, 2 and 11, respectively) were detected as highly mupirocin-methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MMRSA). In this work, our goal was to characterize MRSA and MMRSA clinical isolates by co-application ...

We analyzed mucus gland protein content and pattern for drones of Africanized honey bees. The effect of exogenous ecdysteroids on mucus gland maturation was judged against the endogenous ecdysteroid titer.During the first 5 days of adult life, the mucus protein content increases steeply, whereas the protein pattern becomes reduced in complexity.Subsequently, the protein content decreases, reaching a plateau level at day 8.The protein pattern of mature glands is characterized by three dominant polypeptides. ...

The technological and functional characteristics of fragmented « Canaanean-type » blades with gloss have been studied using two methods. Microwear traces, identified on 18 fragments (of 1 45 found) in comparison with analysis of flint from ethnographic threshing sledges (tribulum), have shown that the tribulum was used in the Ninivite V village of Kutan (Iraq) in the beginning of the third millennium B.C. This discovery widens the range of functional interpretations of glossed tools, and analysis of this ...

Objective To estimate the prevalence of HIV, hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV), and syphilis infections and associated risk exposures in a population-based sample of young women in Vitória, Brazil. Methods From March to December 2006, a cross-sectional sample of women aged 18–29 years was recruited into a single stage, population-based study. Serological markers of HIV, HBV, HCV, and syphilis infections and associated risk exposures were assessed. Results Of 1,200 eligible women, 1,029 (85.8%) enrolled. ...

We examined at-risk, problem, or pathological gambling co-occurrence with frequency of past-year alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use; depressive symptoms; and arrest history. Data included the responses of over 3,000 individuals who participated in a 2006 telephone survey designed to understand the extent of at-risk, problem, and pathological gambling; comorbidity levels with substance use; mental health; and social problems among Southwestern U.S. residents. Data were analyzed with multinomial ...

Vitellogenin (Vg) and lipophorin (Lp) are lipoproteins which play important roles in female reproductive physiology of insects. Both are actively taken up by growing oocytes and especially Vg and its receptor are considered as female-specifically expressed. The finding that the fat body of in honey bee (Apis mellifera) drones synthesizes Vg and is present in hemolymph has long been viewed as a curiosity. The recent paradigm change concerning the role played by Vg in honey bee life history, especially ...

Megaselia scalaris (Loew) is a cosmopolitan and synanthropic scuttle fly, eclectic in its feeding habits and acts as detritivore, parasite, facultative parasite, and parasitoid. Here we report for the first time M. scalaris infesting laboratory colonies of Triatoma brasiliensis Neiva, the most important Chagas disease vector in semiarid areas of Brazil. M. scalaris larvae were found feeding inside bugs; pupae were found in the esophagus and intestinal regions of T. brasiliensis through dissection. ...

The results showed some group-related differences in the process of change. When a process of change was ...
