Abstract We present a spatially resolved H ii region study of the gas-phase metallicity, ionization parameter, and interstellar medium (ISM) pressure maps of six local star-forming and face-on spiral galaxies from the TYPHOON program. Self-consistent metallicity, ionization parameter, and pressure maps are calculated simultaneously through an iterative process to provide useful measures of the local chemical abundance and its relation to localized ISM properties. We constrain the presence of azimuthal ...

U, V, B and R photographic surface photometry is presented for five luminosity class II and one luminosity class III galaxies. A well-defined outer exponential component is present in the luminosity distributions of all six galaxies. It is probable that the gross structure of these galaxies is determined by their spiral arms and that the outer component is not a massive halo. From the available data there is evidence that anaemic spirals are systematically less massive than their ‘ordinary’ counterparts.

Context. NGC 4441 is a candidate for a merger between a spiral and an elliptical galaxy (S+E merger), because it shows typical tidal structures such as an optical tail and two shells. With a far-infrared luminosity of ~5109 this galaxy belongs to the class of moderate luminosity mergers, in which the merging process induces (if at all) only a moderate starburst.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of electrical stimulation on poly(d,l-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) in promoting the recovery of facial function and nerve regeneration after facial nerve (FN) injury in a rat model. In the experimental group, both the NGC and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (ES) were used simultaneously; in the control group, only NGC was used. ES groups were divided into two groups, and direct current (DC) and charge-balanced pulse ...

We reveal the stellar light emerging from the kiloparsec-scale, ring-like structure of the NGC5128 (Centaurus A) galaxy in unprecedented detail. We use arcsecond-scale resolution near infrared images to create a "dust-free" view of the central region of the galaxy, which we then use to quantify the shape of the revealed structure. At the resolution of the data, the structure contains several hundreds of discreet, point-like or slightly elongated sources. Typical extinction corrected surface brightness ...
