Moderate-resolution spectra of NGC 7027, HD 44179, IRAS 21282+5050, and BD + 30 degrees 3639 are presented which show that the "11.3 microns" feature actually peaks at 11.22 microns (891 cm-1). The spectra also show evidence of new emission features near 11.9 and 12.7 microns (840 and 787 cm-1). These are consistent with an origin ...

We derived O, Ne, and Mg abundances in the interstellar medium (ISM) of a relatively isolated S0 galaxy, NGC 4382, observed with the Suzaku XIS instruments and compared the O/Ne/Mg/Fe abundance pattern to those of the ISM in elliptical galaxies. The derived temperature and Fe abundance in the ISM are about 0.3 keV and 0.6--2.9 solar, respectively. The abundance ratios are derived with a better accuracy than the abundances themselves: O/Fe, Ne/Fe, and Mg/Fe ratios are 0.3, 0.7, and 0.6, respectively, ...

Understanding how distinct, near-spherical gas-free clusters of very young, massive stars shape out of vast, complex clouds of molecular hydrogen is one of the biggest challenges in astrophysics. A popular thought dictates that a single gas cloud fragments into many newborn stars which, in turn, energize and rapidly expel the residual gas to form a gas-free cluster. This study demonstrates that the above classical paradigm remarkably reproduces the well-observed central, young cluster (HD 97950) ...

We analyze age distributions of two nearby rich stellar clusters, the NGC 2024 (Flame Nebula) and Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) in the Orion molecular cloud complex. Our analysis is based on samples from the MYStIX survey and a new estimator of pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar ages, AgeJX, derived from X-ray and near-infrared photometric data. To overcome the problem of uncertain individual ages and large spreads of age distributions for entire clusters, we compute median ages and their confidence intervals ...

Using the deepest available Chandra observations of NGC 4649, we find strong evidences of cavities, ripples, and ring-like structures in the hot interstellar medium that appear to be morphologically related with the central radio emission. These structures show no significant temperature variations in correspondence with higher pressure regions (0.5 kpc < r < 3 kpc). On the same spatial scale, a discrepancy between the mass profiles obtained from stellar dynamic and Chandra data represents the telltale ...

NGC 4194 is a post-merger starburst known as The Medusa for its striking tidal features. We present here a detailed study of the structure and kinematics of ionized gas in the central 0.65 kpc of the Medusa. The data include radio continuum maps with resolution up to 018 (35 pc) and a 12.8 μm [Ne ii] data cube with spectral resolution ∼4 km s−1: the first high-resolution, extinction-free observations of this remarkable object. The ionized gas has the kinematic signature of a core in solid-body rotation. ...

We present the analysis of emission line profiles in the Seyfert nucleus of NGC 3783. The lines, covering a wide range of ionization from O0 up to Fe9+, are analysed from IPCS or electronographic data obtained with resolutions from 0.03 to 0.12 nm. When the signal-to-noise ratio allowed it, a precise analysis generally showed a broad, blueshifted component in the line under consideration. The main results of this study are the following: (1) There appears to be a relationship between the FWHI of ...

Using the data obtained previously from Fabry-Perot interferometry, we study the orbital characteristics of the interacting pair of galaxies KPG 302 with the aim to estimate a possible interaction history, the conditions necessary for the spiral arms formation and initial satellite mass. We found by performing N-body/SPH simulations of the interaction that a single passage can produce a grand design spiral pattern in less than 1 Gyr. Althought we reproduce most of the features with the single passage, ...

We present further results from our continuing search for QSOs and related objects situated close to nearby galaxies for the purpose of finding background probes of the intervening interstellar media. To locate the probes we scan UKST objective prism plates for likely candidates and then take low-resolution slit spectra at SAAO for confirmation purposes. Here we present new data for 12 targets in four galaxy fields: nine are newly discovered QSOs with B magnitudes in the range 16.1−18.6, the remaining ...
