Abstract We explore the gas morphology and excitation mechanisms of the ionization cones of the type II Seyfert galaxy NGC 5728. Kinematics derived from near-infrared and optical data from the SINFONI and MUSE Integral Field Units on the VLT reveal active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven outflows powered by a supermassive black hole (SMBH) of mass 3.4 × 10 7 M ⊙ , bolometric luminosity of 1.46 × 10 44 erg s −1 , Eddington ratio of 3.3 × 10 −2 , and an accretion rate of 2.7 × 10 −2 M ⊙ yr −1 . The symmetric bicone outflows show ...

Abstract We present the combined NuSTAR and XMM - Newton 0.6–79 keV spectral analysis of a Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1358, which we selected as a candidate Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nucleus (AGN) on the basis of previous Swift /BAT and Chandra studies. According to our analysis, NGC 1358 is confirmed to be a CT-AGN using physically motivated models, at >3 σ confidence level. Our best fit shows that the column density along the line of sight of the obscuring material surrounding the accreting supermassive ...

An automated transit search algorithm with quantitative selection criteria finds six transit candidates; none are bona fide planetary transits. We characterize the survey detection probability via Monte Carlo injection and recovery of realistic limb-darkened transits. We use this to derive upper limits on the fraction of cluster members with close-in Jupiter radii, RJ, companions. The survey sample contains ∼870 cluster members, and we calculate 95% confidence upper ...

We present the results of CO interferometric observations of the southern elliptical galaxy NGC3557 with ALMA. We have detected both the CO(1-0) emission line and a relatively strong continuum at 3mm. The continuum shows a flat-spectrum central unresolved source (at our angular resolution of 0.7arcsec) and two jets, associated with the larger scale emission observed at lower frequencies. The molecular gas in NGC3557 appears to be concentrated within 250 pc of the center, and shows evidence of organized ...

We present spatial- and velocity-resolved spectroscopy of NGC 7009 acquired with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT UT2/Kueyen. We use these data to determine the structure of the electron temperature and electron density based upon O ii permitted (recombination) lines. We find a strong gradient in the O ii-based electron temperature. It agrees with the electron temperature determined by forbidden (collisionally excited) lines in part of the nebular volume, but also differs by more than 6000 K in other ...

Abstract The density and mass of the spiral galaxy NGC 3198 have been studied as functions of the distance from the center of galaxy depending on its observed rotation curve. Calculation of density and mass at different radii of the galaxy NGC 3198 show that the central inner density ρ 1(r) at r < r t ( r t is the turn-off radius) is found to be constant ρ 1 = 0.387 M o pc −3 , while the density ρ 2(r) of the outer region r > r t is much less than the inner region, which varies from 0.0187 M o pc −3 at r = 4 ...

By analyzing the Chandra archival data of the nearby NGC 6338 galaxy group, we identify two X-ray bright clumps (N-clump and S-clump) within the central 100 kpc, and detect an arc-like X-ray brightness discontinuity at the south boundary of the N-clump, which is defined as a cold front with a gas flow Mach number of M<0.8. Furthermore, at the north-east boundary of the S-clump (dominated by galaxy NGC 6338) another X-ray edge is detected that corresponds to a weaker cold front. Therefore, the two ...

Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the globular cluster NGC6752 have been found to exhibit some chemical peculiarities with respect to the red giant branch (RGB) stars. A discrepancy between [FeI/H] and [FeII/H] (not observed in RGB stars) has been detected adopting spectroscopic temperatures. Moreover, a possible lack of second-population stars along the AGB was claimed. The use of photometric temperatures based on (V-K) colors was proposed to erase this iron discrepancy. Also, ad hoc scenarios have ...

We report on 5 yr of pulsar observations of the globular cluster NGC 5904 (M5). We discuss the details and implications of the phase coherent timing models for PSR B1516+02A and PSR B1516+02B. We present emission-line fluxes for NGC 2452, NGC 7026, M3-30, and Lo 4 from IUE low-dispersion spectra that have been processed by the New Spectral Image Processing System (NEWSIPS). For NGC 2452, a terminal wind velocity of -4200 ± 300 km s-1 was determined from the C IV λ1549 P Cygni profile, while that of NGC 7026 is -4600 ± 300 km s-1, and -4800 ± 400 km s-1 for M3-30. The spectrum of Lo 4 is a stellar continuum with some absorptions and a questionable C IV λ1549 feature.
