An effective three-photon IR quantum cutting excited by visible light used for solar cells, which has attracted broad attention of academia recently, is reported for the first time (to our knowledge). It is based on a single species of rare-earth Er3+ ion of Er0.3Gd0.7VO4 crystalline. It was found that the approximate quantum cutting efficiency of the 1532.5 nm 4I13/2-->4I15/2 fluorescence, when the 2H11/2 level was excited, is about 178.55%.

An enzyme-responsive artificial chaperone system which employs an amphiphilic amylose primer (dodecyl maltopentaose, C12-MP) as a surfactant and phosphorylase b was designed to enable protein refolding. Effective refolding of carbonic anhydrase B after both heat denaturation (70 °C for 10 min) and guanidine hydrochloride (6 M) denaturation was observed by controlled association between the protein molecules and the C12-MP primer micelle through an enzymatic reaction.

Brains of rats that had received needle stab wounds were examined sequentially for 72 h by immunohistochemistry using antibodies to β-amyloid precursor protein (APP). Immunoreactivity appeared 0.5 h after the injury in axons adjacent to the needle tract, becoming stronger over 15 h in neighboring swollen axons. APP-immunoreactive glial cells appeared 6 h after the injury around the needle tract and persisted throughout the experiment. Morphologically, these cells were thought to be mainly astrocytes.

A large amount of Tb2O3 and Dy2O3 has successfully been incorporated into a borate glass with a molar composition of 5B2O3−3Ga2O3−3SiO2−P2O5. Raman scattering analysis revealed the existence of isolated orthborate (BO3)3- groups with increasing rare-earth content. The obtained glass exhibited an excellent Faraday rotation effect in the visible region. The simultaneous incorporation of 40 mol % Tb2O3 and 10 mol % Dy2O3 offered the Verdet constant of as much as −185.3 rad/(T × m) at 632.8 nm at 300 K.
