Alterations in the peripheral inflammatory profile and white matter (WM) deterioration are frequent in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The present study applies free-water imaging to investigate the relationship between altered peripheral inflammation and WM microstructure and their predictive value in determining response to ketamine treatment in MDD.

Increasing interest in sustainable electricity generation through microbial fuel cell technology reinforces the development of new and cost-effective materials for their manufacturing. Such a goal can be reached with inexpensive ceramic materials as separators. In this study, we present a new approach for increasing their lifetime, while dealing with problematic waste and thus using recycled polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric. Two approaches were applied, where PP was either reused as an additional ...

Background Mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is the most common germ cell tumor. It accounts for 10% to 20% of all ovarian masses. The likelihood of malignancy arising from within an MCT is low, and prognosis is poor. Methods A single-institution retrospective chart review was completed of all cases of MCT from 2004 to 2012. Multiple variables were examined including procedure performed, residual disease after surgery, surgical stage, histologic type, site of primary disease, date of recurrence, whether or not ...

An infodemic is excess information, including false or misleading information, that spreads in digital and physical environments during a public health emergency. The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by an unprecedented global infodemic that has led to confusion about the benefits of medical and public health interventions, with substantial impact on risk-taking and health-seeking behaviors, eroding trust in health authorities and compromising the effectiveness of public health responses and ...

The RNA polymerase core associated with σ S transcribes many genes related to stress or to the stationary phase. When cells enter a phase of phosphate starvation, the transcription of several genes and operons, collectively known as the PHO regulon, is strongly induced. The promoters of the PHO genes hitherto analysed are recognized by σ D -associated RNA polymerase. A mutation in the gene that encodes σ S , rpoS , significantly increases the level of alkaline phosphatase activity and the overproduction ...

The "Adopt a Bacterium" project is based on the use of social network as a tool in Microbiology undergraduate education, improving student learning and encouraging students to participate in collaborative learning. The approach involves active participation of both students and teachers, emphasizing knowledge exchange, based on widely used social media. Students were organized in groups and asked to adopt a specific bacterial genus and, subsequently, submit posts about "adopted genus". The formative ...

INTRODUCTION: Pseudoscientific beliefs are widespread in society and are influenced by several factors. The endorsement of alternative medicine treatments, mostly not evidence based, has relevant negative impacts on health care public policies. The understanding of the impact of pseudoscientific beliefs on the endorsement of alternative treatments is a relevant issue in this matter. OBJECTIVES: We aim at describing scientific and pseudoscientific beliefs and its impact on the endorsement of evidence ...

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have made significant progress in recent years in all aspects of their technology. BESs usually work with a membrane or a separator, which is one of their most critical components affecting performance. Quite often, biofilm from either the anolyte or catholyte forms on the membrane, which can negatively affect its performance. In critical cases, the long-term power performance observed for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) has dropped by over 90%. Surface modification and ...

Progress in neurodevelopmental brain research has been achieved through the use of animal models. Such models not only help understanding biological changes that govern brain development, maturation and aging, but are also essential for identifying possible mechanisms of neurodevelopmental and age-related chronic disorders, and to evaluate possible interventions with potential relevance to human disease. Genetic relationship of rhesus monkeys to humans makes those animals a great candidate for such ...

Scientific hype understood as an exaggeration of the significance and/or promise of scientific discovery, has been often seen as a problem for the production of science communication, not of reception; press releases and traditional media are usually blamed for exaggerating claims and using click-bait headlines, and the interest of the public is usually seen as the background motivator behind the hype. The role of social media in the present COVID-19 crisis, however – specially the sudden ascension ...

The urachus is a remnant of the urogenital sinus and allantois, which persists after antenatal involution. Despite its rudimentary postnatal presence, it can undergo metaplasia and tumor formation. Malignant transformation of the urachus is rare. However, these tumors can recur and develop pseudomyxoma peritonei. Thus, they should remain on the differential for any female patient with a pelvic mass. A 28-year old G9P2062 presented at 8 weeks' gestation requesting pregnancy termination. On ultrasound, ...

Abstract siRNA molecules possess high potential as molecular tools and can be used as effective therapeutics in humans. One of the key steps in the action of these molecules is the choice of antisense strand by the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). To explain this process, we verified the theory which states that antisense strand selection is based on the thermodynamically less stable 5′ end of siRNA. Based on the studies presented herein, we observed that for the tested siRNA duplexes, the difference ...

Branched amino functional polyoctahedral silsesquioxanes (POSS) were prepared by using different stoichiometric ratios of two olefins: allylamine and vinyltrimethoxysilane. Amino-rich CPG particles were produced by direct silanisation with amino-POSS silanes. The parameters of surface morphology (total volume and size of pores) of the obtained supports were determined by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method. Results from Scanning Electron Microscopy show that there is no alteration in surface chemistry and ...

To mitigate the negative effects of landslide occurrence, there is a need for effective landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM). The fundamental source for LSM is landslide inventory. Unfortunately, there are still areas where landslide inventories are not generated due to financial or reachability constraints. Considering this led to the following research question: can we model landslide susceptibility in an area for which landslide inventory is not available but where such is available for surrounding ...

Fear of vaccines is as old as vaccines themselves.Even before Jenner and the smallpox vaccine, people had their questions and concerns about the empirical immunization programs of the time.Back then, inoculating someone with secretions from the pustules of a smallpox patient was already a common practice, but not taken up willingly by many. The book "The great inoculator: the untold story of Daniel Sutton and his medical revolutions" by Gavin Weightman, gives us a good idea of how the concept of inoculation, ...

ABSTRACT Science teaching in most Brazilian Universities tends to focus mainly on lectures and provides few opportunities for the development of modern teaching skills. Our group developed an online tool called Adopt a Bacterium, which consists on a Facebook group where teacher assistants (TAs) can interact with students and have a first contact with student-focused learning approaches. This work shows the TAs’ own assessment of how the tool could be further explored to help them develop skills and ...

Abstract While there is worldwide tendency to promote the use of scientific evidence to inform policy making, little has been done to train scientists and policy makers for this interaction. If we want to bridge the gap between academia, scientific knowledge, and policy, we must begin by providing formal training and skill building for actors and stakeholders. Scientists are not trained to communicate and inform policy, and policy makers are not trained to understand scientific process and assess ...
