Natasha Patrito, Claire McCague, Peter Norton, Nils O. Petersen,

Spatial control of cell growth on surfaces can be achieved by the selective deposition of molecules that influence cell adhesion. The fabrication of such substrates often relies upon photolithography and requires complex surface chemistry to anchor adhesive and inhibitory molecules. The production of simple, cost-effective substrates for cell patterning would benefit numerous areas of bioanalytical research including tissue engineering and biosensor development. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is routinely ...

Two synthetic routes, "grafting-from" and "grafting-to" the chitosan backbone, were investigated to prepare chitosan-graft-poly(OEGMA) copolymers by ATRP. The copolymers were characterised by 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analyses and GPC. Estimates of the degree of grafting were quantitatively found from integration of the 1H NMR spectra. The GPC data indicated that the hydrodynamic volumes of the polymers were significantly altered by the incorporation of poly(OEGMA). A comparison of ...

Patterned surface modification of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is achieved by combining ultraviolet-initiated graft polymerization (UV-GP) and photolithography. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) patterns were grafted onto PDMS with micrometer-scale feature edge resolution. The morphology and chemical composition of the grafted layers were assessed by optical and atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and XPS imaging. AFM section analyses demonstrated ...

In the present research, a rapid, simple and efficient green method is used for the incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) to create biocatalysts with excellent properties for pharmaceutical purpose. In the first phase, Caralluma tuberculata capped AgNPs (Ca-AgNPs) were prepared using green synthetic approach and in the second phase Caralluma tuberculata capped AgNPs were hybridized with poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate to form PEGMA-AgNPs. Abstract Ultra thin films of poly(2,2′-bithiophene) with thickness of 11–33 nm were electrochemically deposited on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxithiophene):poly(styrene sulfonic acid) modified indium tin oxide substrates using a new approach for electrochemical synthesis. Ultrasonic emulsification of aqueous perchloric acid and 2,2′-bithiophene monomer is an effective method to disperse this water insoluble monomer in micro droplets that improved the contact with the electrode. APLF is a novel protein of unknown function that accumulates at sites of chromosomal DNA strand breakage via forkhead-associated (FHA) domain-mediated interactions with XRCC1 and XRCC4. APLF can also accumulate at sites of chromosomal DNA strand breaks independently of the FHA domain via an unidentified mechanism that requires a highly conserved C-terminal tandem zinc finger domain. Here, we show that the zinc finger domain binds tightly to poly(ADP-ribose), a polymeric posttranslational modification ...

Aaron D. Pinnola, Natasha Naumova, Meera Shah, Alexei V. Tulin,

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 protein (PARP1) mediates chromatin loosening and activates the transcription of inducible genes, but the mechanism of PARP1 regulation in chromatin is poorly understood. We have found that PARP1 interaction with chromatin is dynamic and that PARP1 is exchanged continuously between chromatin and nucleoplasm, as well as between chromatin domains. Specifically, the PARP1 protein preferentially interacts with nucleosomal particles, and although the nucleosomal linker DNA ...

Ethambutol (2S, 2′S)-2, 2′-(ethane-1, 2-diyldiimino) dibutan-1-ol) is a first-line antitubercular drug effective against actively growing Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Resistance of the mycobacterium to ethambutol among tuberculosis (TB) patients results from inadequate or inappropriate dosing of treatment or using low quality medication. It is therefore necessary to develop reliable methods for determining the ethambutol metabolic profile of patients at point of care for proper dosing. Herein an efficient ...

Polymer thin films are often used in transdermal patches as a method of continuous drug administration for patients with chronic illness. Understanding the drug segregation and distribution within these films is important for monitoring proper drug release over time. Surface-layer matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (SL-MALDI-MSI) is a unique analytical technique that provides an optical representation of chemical compositions that exist at the surface of polymeric ...
