This article explores the use of mixed methods research (MMR) in library and information science (LIS) research in South Africa from 2000 to 2008. The authors contrast the mixed methods research debate in the general methodological literature to how this method was practiced within the LIS scientific community. They reviewed 613 research articles published in six peer-reviewed LIS journals in South Africa, finding the research methods in these journals to be surveys drawing on positivistic assumptions ...

Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) containing Nafion composite membranes were prepared via melt‐blending at 250 °C. Using three different types of CNTs such as pure CNTs (pCNTs), oxidised CNTs (oCNTs) and amine functionalised CNTs (fCNTs); the effect of CNTs surface oxidation as well as functionalisation in composite membranes was investigated by focussing on three aspects: thermo‐mechanical stability, thermal degradation and proton conductivity. The oCNTs‐containing Nafion composite membrane exhibited ...

In Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), damage-induced mutagenesis is dependent on the C-family DNA polymerase, DnaE2. Included with dnaE2 in the Mtb SOS regulon is a putative operon comprising Rv3395c , which encodes a protein of unknown function restricted primarily to actinomycetes, and Rv3394c , which is predicted to encode a Y-family DNA polymerase. These genes were previously identified as components of an imuA - imuB - dnaE2 –type mutagenic cassette widespread among bacterial genomes. Here, we confirm ...

Large-angle quasielastic scattering has been studied in a high-Z1Z2 nuclear reaction of the type leading to superheavy-element production by cold fusion. We show that despite the presence of strongly dissipative channels, and the complete absence of fusion, the notion of an external barrier distribution, determined by strong coupling to collective excitations of target and projectile, is still valid. Furthermore, our method allows us to deduce some properties of the deep-inelastic processes in this ...

Carbon nanospheres (CNS) were synthesized using bis(acaetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) as catalyst precursor in a traditional chemical vapor deposition (CVD) carbon nanotube synthetic reactor. The as-prepared products were characterized with Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, High resolution transmission electron microscopy, (HR-TEM), Thermogravimetric analysis, (TGA), Powder X-ray diffraction, (PXRD) and Energy dispersive spectroscopy, (EDS). All indicate the presence of carbon nanospheres ...

By combining in situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, ex situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, we show that chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on vertically aligned ZnO nanorods can synthesize different carbon nanostructures (CNs), whose morphology is driven by the ZnO nanorods and whose dimensions and structures change as a function of the process temperature. The CNs range from amorphous carbon cups, completely covering the nanorods, ...

Abstract Self-assembled fullerene C60-nanorods on Si (1 1 1) substrates were irradiated by 2 MeV protons with fluencies ranging from 5.0 × 1016 to 1.0 × 1017 ions/cm2. Proton irradiation has induced optical band-gap changes and surface modification of the C60-nanorods making them insoluble in toluene specifically. Raman spectroscopy investigations indicate a change in the substantial Raman shift to lower values of the characteristic Ag modes of C60 after irradiation. X-rays diffraction results indicate ...

Solid-state compound phase formation has been investigated between thin metal films (Cu, Ir, Mo, Pt, Re, Y, Yb, and Zr) and SiO2 substrates using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The thin-film couples were annealed for time periods ranging from 30 min to 3 h between 320 and 900 °C. It was found that Y, Yb, and Zr react with SiO2 whereas Cu, Ir, Pt, Re, and Mo do not. Heats of reaction were calculated for all possible combinations of silicide and metal- ...

Using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction, we investigated the morphology of ZnO (zinc oxide) films deposited via magnetron sputtering as a function of the chamber's operating pressure. We also studied how ZnO films, when used as templates, influence the morphology of zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) grown using the hydrothermal method. Our work shows that the resultant ZnO NRs were strongly affected by the initial ZnO film parameters (nanoparticle (NP) distribution ...

Metformin is a widely used drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Its blood glucose-lowering effects are initially due to inhibition of hepatic glucose production and increased peripheral glucose utilization. Metformin has also been shown to have several beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk factors and it is the only oral antihyperglycaemic agent thus far associated with decreased macrovascular complications in patients with diabetes. Adenosine Monophosphate Activated-Protein Kinase ( ...

Missed opportunities for vaccination (MOV) is an important barrier hindering full immunisation coverage among eligible children. Though factors responsible for MOV are well documented in literature, little attention has been paid to the role of inequalities. The aim of this study is to examine the association between structural or compositional factors and education inequalities in MOV. Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition technique was used to explain the factors contributing to the average gap in missed ...

There is an urgent need to examine the magnitude and factors responsible for missed opportunities for vaccination, to rapidly achieve national immunization targets.
