Obesity is thought to be an aetiological factor for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). We analysed changes in the incidence of SCFE in Scotland over the last two decades. During this period rates of childhood obesity have risen substantially and evidence for a relationship between these changes and the incidence of SCFE was sought. We found that the incidence of SCFE increased from 3.78 per 100,000 children in 1981 to 9.66 per 100,000 in 2000 (R(2) = 0.715): a two and a half times increase over ...

We have previously shown, using radioligand binding studies, that N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) NR1 and NR2A receptor subunits density was decreased in the forebrain of morphine-dependent rats. We have now determined if morphine-dependent rats display regional differences in NMDA receptor expression and whether such changes are functionally relevant. In morphine-dependent rats, the expression of NR1 and NR2A subunits protein, as determined by Western blotting with NMDA receptor subunit antibodies, ...

Using an asymmetric color matching technique, we measured the perceived changes that occur in the saturation and hue of colored stimuli at different eccentricities within the central 25 degrees of the human retina in nine color-normal subjects. A cone-opponent-based vector model was used to compute the activity of the L-M and S-(L+M) channels. The results show that a large proportion of the shifts in saturation and hue that occur with increasing retinal eccentricity are mirrored by decreased activity ...

We investigated in vitro a mechanism by which particulate debris may induce bone resorption and cause implant loosening. We first studied two standard particles: latex, which is considered to be inert, and zymosan, which is inflammatory. Macrophages that phagocytosed either particle became activated, and stimulated 15 times as much bone resorption as did control macrophages. For activation to occur, 100 times more latex than zymosan had to be phagocytosed. We also found that bone cement and polyethylene ...
