Two new aporphine alkaloids, N-nitrosoanonaine (1) and N-nitrosoxylopine (2), were isolated from the aerial parts of Duguetia furfuracea, a weed found in several Brazilian regions. Their structures were elucidated by NMR analysis, CHN analysis, CD, IR, and MS data. The single-crystal X-ray strucutural determination of the structure of 1 was also perfomed.

This paper describes the development of a gas chromatography (GC) method used for the assay of isotretinoin in its isolated form and in pharmaceutical formulations. Isotretinoin soft and hard gelatin capsules were prepared with various excipients. The performance of the proposed gas chromatography method was compared to that of traditional high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems for this substance, and the GC parameters were established based on several preliminary tests, including thermal ...

OBJECTIVE: Neurologic complications are known as important cause of morbidity and mortality in orthotopic heart transplantation. Our aim was to identify the frequency and outcome of neurologic complications after heart transplantation in a prospective observational study. METHOD: From September 93 to September 99, as part of our routine heart transplantation protocol all patients with end-stage cardiac failure were evaluated by the same neurologist before and at the time of any neurologic event ( ...

Theoretical calculations of the binding energies of metal-polyphenols and metal-cellulose, as well as the hydration energies of metal-polyphenols were used to support the results obtained for the bioaccessibility of aluminium, cadmium, iron and zinc from four types of lettuce and one type of cole that were evaluated using an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion model and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The bioaccessibility of Al found in the vegetables were less than 11% of the total ...

Caffeine, a xanthine alkaloid compound, is consumed widely and daily by humans, as it is present in several regular beverages such as tea, coffee, soda beverages, and some drugs. Its consumption triggers arousal and alertness, improves mood, and causes the release of catecholamines, which induce beneficial effects on human behavior. Nonetheless, caffeine has been related to other beneficial effects such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions that are extremely important to human health, altering ...

We propose a Pandemic Risk Perception Scale. Our scale comprises two constructs, Dread Risk and Personal Exposure, divided into five dimensions: Infection Risk, Emotional Health Risk, Health System Risk,Financial Risk, and Alimentary Risk. Using multidimensional item response theory, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling on two samples of respondents, our results show that Alimentary Risk, Health System Risk, and Emotional Health Risk are the main dimensions of risk perception ...

South American coralsnakes are characterized by inconspicuous and poorly known species, which are potentially very sensitive to climate change. Here, we assess the impact of future climate change on the distributions of the Micrurus lemniscatus species complex after addressing the Wallacean shortfalls and refining the knowledge about their current geographic distributions. We also evaluate the efficiency of the current reserve network to protect the species in the present and future. We applied ...

Food wastage is a relevant problem all over the world. Remains of prepared foods increase the waste of resources due to energy and labor used in their preparation. However, food waste has a high energy potential can be converted in the form of methane via anaerobic digestion. This study evaluated the potential for recovery of energy contained in food wastes and presented a way to stablish the anaerobic digestion process using solely food waste. For this purpose, a prototype anaerobic digester was ...

Land slope contributes to decrease the productivity in the forestry sector activities, including skidding operations. Thus, it is important to study it in order to improve the forest operations planning. Based on this hypothesis, this study aims to analyze the times of the operational cycle and the productivity of the skidder in slope terrain. The study was conducted in Pinus taeda plantations of a forest company located in the CentralWest region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, in three slope classes: ...

This work describes the syntheses of four compounds containing [Ni(RSO2NCS2)2]2− anions: (Bu4N)2[Ni(C6H5SO2NCS2)2] (1), (Bu4N)2[Ni(4-ClC6H4SO2NCS2)2] (2), (Bu4N)2[Ni(2-CH3C6H4SO2NCS2)2] (3) and (Bu4N)2[Ni(4-BrC6H4SO2NCS2)2] (4). They were obtained in the crystalline form by the reaction of the appropriate potassium N-R-sulfonyldithiocarbimate (RSO2NCS2K2) with nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate in methanol/water. Elemental analyses were consistent with the proposed formulae. UV–Vis and IR data are consistent ...

Subarachnoid hemorrhage following intracranial aneurysmal rupture is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Several factors may affect the probability of rupture, such as tobacco and alcohol use; size, shape, and location of the aneurysm; presence of intraluminal thrombus; and even the sex of the patient. However, few data correlate such findings with the timing of aneurysmal rupture. The authors report 2 cases of middle-age women with headache and MRI findings of incidental aneurysms. Magnetic ...

Abstract Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has been widely used to promote tissue repair. However, PBMT's critical roles in the epithelial and mesenchymal tissues interactions are still barely known. Herein, we investigated light parameters on challenged keratinocytes (KC)—i.e., cultivated under oxidative stress—solely or associated with fibroblasts (FB) in a co‐culture system. Cells were treated with PBMT at the wavelength of 660 nm, at 20 mW and 0.71 W/cm 2 . Three different energy densities were primarily ...

Abstract Although Bioactive Glasses (BGs) have been progressively optimized, their preparation often still involves the use of toxic reagents and high calcination temperatures to remove organic solvents. In the present work, these synthesis related drawbacks were overcome by treating the ashes from the Equisetum hyemale plant in an ethanol/water solution to develop a bioactive composite [glass/carbon (BG-Carb)]. The BG-Carb was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron ...
