In data mining it is usually desirable that discovered knowledge have some characteristics such as being as accurate as possible, comprehensible and surprising to the user. The vast majority of data mining algorithms produce, as part of their results, information of a statistical nature that allows the user to assess how accurate and reliable the discovered knowledge is. However, in many cases this is not enough for the user. Even if discovered knowledge is highly accurate from a statistical point ...

The clinical importance of systemic bone loss as a contributory factor to alveolar bone loss and the subsequent loss of teeth merits further study, given that osteoporosis and periodontal disease lead to significantly increased morbidity and mortality and higher public expenditure of funds. This case-control study evaluated the association between osteoporosis and periodontal disease. The sample consisted of 139 postmenopausal women: 48 in the case group (with periodontal disease) and 91 in the control ...

In the last few years, the data mining community has proposed a number of objective rule interestingness measures to select the most interesting rules, out of a large set of discovered rules. However, it should be recalled that objective measures are just an estimate of the true degree of interestingness of a rule to the user, the so-called real human interest. The latter is inherently subjective. Hence, it is not clear how effective, in practice, objective measures are. More precisely, the central ...

Power consumption is the main concern in developing Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications. Consequently, several strategies have been proposed for investigating the power consumption of this kind of application. These strategies can help to predict the WSN lifetime, provide recommendations to application developers and may optimize the energy consumed by the WSN applications. While measurement is a known and precise strategy for power consumption evaluation, it is very costly, tedious and may ...

Health impacts of air pollution may differ depending on sex, education, socioeconomic status (SES), location at time of death, and other factors. In São Paulo, Brazil, questions remain regarding roles of individual and community characteristics. We estimate susceptibility to air pollution based on individual characteristics, residential SES, and location at time of death (May 1996-December 2010). Exposures for particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur ...

Two of major weeds affecting cereal crops worldwide are Avena fatua L. (wild oat) and Lolium rigidum Gaud. (rigid ryegrass). Thus, development of new herbicides against these weeds is required; in line with this, benzoxazinones, their degradation products, and analogues have been shown to be important allelochemicals and natural herbicides. Despite earlier structure–activity studies demonstrating that hydrophobicity (log P) of aminophenoxazines correlates to phytotoxicity, our findings for a series ...

Abstract The major role of integrins is to mediate cell adhesion but some of them are involved in the osteoblasts–titanium (Ti) interactions. In this study, we investigated the participation of integrins in osteoblast differentiation induced by Ti with nanotopography (Ti‐Nano) and with microtopography (Ti‐Micro). By using a PCR array, we observed that, compared with Ti‐Micro, Ti‐Nano upregulated the expression of five integrins in mesenchymal stem cells, including integrin β3, which increases osteoblast ...
