Cottonwood Lake area wetlands, North Dakota, U.S.A. Fluctuations in pond permanence, size, and salinity are key features of prairie-pothole wetlands that provide a variety of wetland habitats for waterfowl in the northern prairie of North America. Observation of water-level and salinity fluctuations in a semi-permanent wetland pond over a 20-year period, included periods when the wetland occasionally was dry, as well as wetter years when the pond depth and surface extent doubled while volume increased ...

Patients with psychotic depression exhibit elevated cortisol levels. Competitively antagonizing cortisol at the glucocorticoid receptor with mifepristone demonstrated therapeutic benefit in early studies of patients with psychotic depression. We present a combined analysis of all controlled phase 2 and 3 studies to report antipsychotic differences between treatment with mifepristone or placebo and to evaluate the relative contributions to response of attaining an a priori-defined, high mifepristone ...

James W. LaBaugh, Thomas C. Winter, George A. Swanson, Donald O. Rosenberry, R. David Nelson, Ned H. Euliss,

Twenty‐seven years of data from midcontinent wetlands indicate that the response of these wetlands to extremes in precipitation—drought and deluge—persists beyond the extreme events. Chemical changes transcend such simple relations as increased salinity during dry periods because drought provides mechanisms for removal of salt by deflation and seepage to groundwater. Inundation of vegetation zones including rooted or floating mats of cattail ( Typha glauca ) can stimulate sulfate reduction and shift ...

Abstract Three AVHRR-LAC data sets acquired in September 1990 and January 1991 were used to map the forest resources of Madagascar. The island was partitioned into four strata to include: (1) the western hardwoods, (2) the central grasslands, (3) the eastern rainforest, and (4) spiny forest. Each stratum was classified separately using AVHRR-LAC data in conjunction with 1984-1988 Landsat-MSS photoproducts. The results of AVHRR classification indicate that approximately 11 per cent of the island is covered ...

Ross Nelson, Ned Horning, T. A. STONE,

Abstract AVHRR-LAC thermal data and Landsat MSS and TM spectral data were used to estimate the rate of forest clearing in Mato Grosso, Brazil, between 1981 and 1984. The Brazilian state was stratified into forest and non-forest. A list sampling procedure was used in the forest stratum to select Landsat MSS scenes for processing based on estimates of fire activity in the scenes. Fire activity in 1984 was estimated using AVHRR-LAC thermal data. Slate-wide estimates of forest conversion indicate that ...

Abstract Behavioral ecologists are increasingly interested in patterns of repeatable variation in behaviors. The study of this variation, under the label ‘animal personality’, frequently makes assumptions both in regards to what the ecological significance of particular behavioral responses might be and whether different methodologies in fact test the same behavior. Here, using house crickets ( Acheta domesticus ), we tested whether stereotypical approaches to quantifying repeatable variation in exploratory ...

The circulation and exchange processes controlling transport and water renewal within the western subregion of Florida Bay, USA, are presented and compared to our previous findings for the north-central and northeast subregions of the bay. We find there is a common bank/basin flow response to wind forcing that is the primary driver of water renewal for each of the regions studied. Florida Bay is a patchwork of shallow basins surrounded by very shallow banks that are cut through with deeper channels ...

Human vascular permeability factor (hVPF) is a glycoprotein that promotes fluid and protein leakage from blood vessels. The function of hVPF is at present unknown, but the potent bioactivities of this protein suggest that it could act during inflammation, wound healing, and tumor angiogenesis.hVPF was purified from serum-free conditioned medium of the human histiocytic lymphoma cell line U937 as a disulfide-linked dimeric 40-kDa protein that promoted dermal blood vessel leakage in guinea pigs at a ...

Eric E. Nelson, Steven E. Shelton, Ned H. Kalin,

The authors demonstrated individual differences in inhibited behavior and withdrawal responses of laboratory-born rhesus monkeys when initially exposed to a snake. Most monkeys displayed a small significant increase in their behavioral inhibition in the presence of a snake. A few monkeys had marked responses, and some actively withdrew. Although the responses of the most extreme laboratory-born monkeys were comparable to feral-born monkeys, the responses of the laboratory-born monkeys rapidly habituated. ...
