Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by at least 1,000 different mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene (CFTR). To determine the frequency of 70 common worldwide CFTR mutations in 155 Euro-Brazilian CF patients and in 38 Afro-Brazilian CF patients, we used direct PCR amplification of DNA from a total of 386 chromosomes from CF patients born in three different states of Brazil. The results show that screening for seventy mutations accounts ...

This study aimed to identify differences in the acute cardio-respiratory, metabolic and perceptual responses between exercise performed on the treadmill and on the cycle ergometer at several intensities. The sample comprised of 20 voluntary male participants (age=22.5 ± 1.8 years; height=177.7 ± 7.0 cm; body mass=72.6 ± 7.9 kg; fat mass=7.87 ± 1.3%) that performed 5 submaximal 8 min exercise bouts, interspersed with a 10 min period of passive recovery. Two novel trivalent antimony(III) and bismuth(III) complexes with the nitrogen-donor heterocyclic ligand dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz) were synthesized and characterized as [Sb(dppz)Cl3]∙H2O∙CH3OH and [Bi(dppz)Cl3]. The crystal structure of Sb(III) complex was determined by X-ray crystallography. These complexes were evaluated for their activity against the promastigote form of Sb(III)-sensitive and –resistant Leishmania infantum chagasi and Leishmania amazonensis strains. Both complexes were ...

Abstract A 3 bp deletion of condon 508 (phenylalanine) of the cystic fibrosis (CF) gene constitutes the mutation of most CF chromosomes. The frequency of this mutation (referred to as ΔF508), varies considerably between populations, ranging form 26% of the CF mutations in Turkey to 88% in Denmark. To determine the frequency of the ΔF508 mutation in Brazilian Caucasoid CF patients, we used direct polymerase chain reacion (PCR) amplification of DNA obtained from dried blood spots on Guthrie cards, followed ...

Solution enthalpies of 18-crown-6 have been obtained for a set of 14 protic and aprotic solvents at 298.15 K. The complementary use of Solomonov's methodology and a QSPR-based approach allowed the identification of the most significant solvent descriptors that model the interaction enthalpy contribution of the solution process (ΔintHA/S). Results were compared with data previously obtained for 1,4-dioxane. Although the interaction enthalpies of 18-crown-6 correlate well with those of 1,4-dioxane, ...

Occupants' behaviours are a major determinant of energy use in buildings. The related savings potential has been insufficiently exploited. Although research has addressed behavioural savings through real-world interventions and quantitative modelling approaches, it has not yet explored the full variety of household activities. This work proposes an integrative modelling approach of energy behaviours in the residential setting as a tool to estimate the behavioural impact of households on energy consumption. ...

A lake evaporation study was conducted on a small water-supply reservoir (8.8 km2) in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, during 30 months. Air temperature and humidity, wind speed and direction, sunshine duration and solar radiation were measured continuously, together with monthly water temperature profiles. In order to obtain a wide-range magnetoelectric (ME) response on a ME nanocomposite that matches industry requirements, Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.92 (Terfenol-D)/CoFe₂O₄/P(VDF-TrFE) flexible films were produced by the solvent casting technique and their morphologic, piezoelectric, magnetic and magnetoelectric properties were investigated. The obtained composites revealed a high piezoelectric response (≈-18 pC·N-1) that is independent of the weight ratio between the fillers. In turn, the magnetic properties of the ...

The development of a DC magnetic field sensor based on a magnetoelectric (ME) PVDF/Metglas composite is reported. The ME sensing composite has an electromechanical resonance frequency close to 25.4 kHz, a linear response (r 2 = 0.997) in the 0-2 Oe DC magnetic field range, and a maximum output voltage of 112 mV (ME voltage coefficient α 33 of ≈30 V·cm -1 ·Oe -1 ). By incorporating a charge amplifier, an AC-RMS converter and a microcontroller with an on-chip analog-to-digital converter, the ME voltage response ...

Inconel 625 is a nickel-based alloy that is mainly used in high-temperature applications. Inconel 625 exhibits an unstable plastic flow at elevated temperatures characterized by serrated yielding, well-known as the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect. The evaluation of the mechanical properties of Inconel 625 at high temperatures is the aim of this work. The tensile tests were executed in temperatures ranging from room temperature to 1000 °C with strain rates of 2 × 10−4 to 2 × 10−3 s−1. The creep tests were ...

Second-generation (2G) sugar is the principal building block in biorefineries producing sustainable fuels, green chemicals, and materials. Its production involves a pre-treatment strategy, which can remove either hemicellulose or lignin, followed by a cellulase cocktail-mediated hydrolysis of pre-treated biomass applying numerous modifications. The high production cost of sugar from biomass using high-solid loadings with the desired purity is the important limiting factor for their economic conversion ...

Current guidelines differ slightly on the recommendations for treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients, and although there are some undisputed recommendations, there is still debate regarding the management of COPD. One of the hindrances to deciding which therapeutic approach to choose is late diagnosis or misdiagnosis of COPD. After a proper diagnosis is achieved and severity assessed, the choice between a stepwise or “hit hard” approach has to be made. For GOLD A patients ...
