Abstract— The rate of energy transfer from enzyme‐generated triplet acetone to riboflavin increases by three orders of magnitude when the flavin is charge‐transfer complexed with 3 ,5‐dihalogenotyrosines or with thyroxine. A very fast long‐range energy transfer to form the first excited singlet state of riboflavin in the complex, followed by a very efficient intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold, is postulated to account for the results.

Developing powerful phylogenetic markers is a key concern in fungal phylogenetics. Here we report degenerate primers that amplify the single-copy genes Mcm7 (MS456) and Tsr1 (MS277) across a wide range of Pezizomycotina (Ascomycota).Phylogenetic analyses of 59 taxa belonging to the Eurotiomycetes, Lecanoromycetes, Leotiomycetes, Lichinomycetes and Sordariomycetes, indicate the utility of these loci for fungal phylogenetics at taxonomic levels ranging from genus to class. We also tested the new primers ...

Invertebrate-pathogenic fungi in the genus Metarhizium are commonly found throughout the world on a wide range of different arthropod hosts. Some strains have been developed as biopesticides and many others have shown potential for controlling important insect pests. Given the current interest in using these fungi, precise identification at species level is crucial, both for understanding their diversity and ecology and for regulatory approval and monitoring of new biopesticides. Metarhizium has ...

Accurate and detailed species distribution maps are fundamental for documenting and interpreting biological diversity. For snakes, an ecologically diverse group of reptiles, syntheses and detailed data on distribution patterns remain scarce. We present the first comprehensive collection of detailed, voucher-based, point-locality, range maps for all described and documented Brazilian snakes, with the major aim of mitigating the Wallacean shortfall and as a contribution towards a better understanding ...

Abstract Bergmann's rule states that endothermic species from cool areas tend to have larger body sizes than those from warm areas. Allen's rule maintains that endothermic species from cool environments should have shorter extremities than their counterparts from warm areas. Although a number of studies have supported both rules, the validity of these trends remains controversial, especially for ectothermic organisms. Here, we studied intraspecific morphological variation in Four-Eyed Frogs (Pleurodema ...

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a xenobiotic with endocrine disruptor properties which interacts with various receptors, eliciting a cellular response. In the plastic industry, BPA is widely used in the production of polycarbonate and epoxy-phenolic resins to provide elastic properties. It can be found in the lining of canned foods, certain plastic containers, thermal printing papers, composite dental fillings, and medical devices, among other things. Therefore, it is a compound that, directly or indirectly, ...

Most forms of biomatter are ephemeral, which means they transform or deteriorate after a certain time. From this perspective, implantable healthcare devices designed for temporary treatments should exhibit the ability to degrade and either blend in with healthy tissues, or be cleared from the body with minimal disruption after accomplishing their designated tasks. This topic is currently being investigated in the field of biomedical micro- and nanoswimmers. These tiny devices have the ability to ...

Abstract Due to the rapid developmental growth in preschool-aged children, more precise measurement of the effects of burns on child health outcomes is needed. Expanding upon the Shriners Hospitals for Children/American Burn Association Burn Outcome Questionnaire 0 to 5 (BOQ0–5), we developed a conceptual framework describing domains important in assessing recovery from burn injury among preschool-aged children (1–5 years). We developed a working conceptual framework based on the BOQ0–5, the National ...

Abstract Understanding genetic architecture of plasma lipidome could provide better insights into lipid metabolism and its link to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Here, we perform genome-wide association analyses of 141 lipid species (n = 2,181 individuals), followed by phenome-wide scans with 25 CVD related phenotypes (n = 511,700 individuals). We identify 35 lipid-species-associated loci (P <5 ×10 −8 ), 10 of which associate with CVD risk including five new loci- COL5A1 , GLTPD2 , SPTLC3 , MBOAT7 and GALNT16 (false ...

The air‐drying was carried out at temperatures of 50, 60, 70 and 80C, and velocities of 1.80 or 1.91 m/s. The moisture diffusion coefficient, Bi number and moisture transfer coefficient ranged between 1.04 × 10 −10 and 8.50 × 10 −10 m 2 /s, between 0.100 and 0.112 and between 1.07 × 10 −8 and 7.72 × 10 − ...

The adhesion of initial colonizers such as Streptococcus mutans to collagen is critical for dentinal and root caries progression. One of the most described pathological and aging-associated changes in collagen—including dentinal collagen—is the generation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) such as methylglyoxal (MGO)–derived AGEs. Despite previous reports suggesting that AGEs alter bacterial adhesion to collagen, the biophysics driving oral streptococcal attachment to MGO-modified collagen ...

Objective Somatic mutations in the ubiquitin-specific protease 8 ( USP8 ) gene are frequent in corticotroph tumors causing Cushing’s disease (CD). Corticotroph tumor progression, the so-called Nelson’s syndrome (NS), is a potentially life-threatening complication of bilateral adrenalectomy in patients with refractory CD that is caused by the development of an ACTH-secreting tumor of the pituitary gland. Whether USP8 alterations are also present in progressive Nelson’s tumors has not been studied in detail ...

Abstract Dysregulation of cholesterol homeostasis is associated with many diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. Liver X receptors (LXRs) are major upstream regulators of cholesterol homeostasis and are activated by endogenous cholesterol metabolites such as 27-hydroxycholesterol (27HC). However, disparate reports of LXR function have emerged, especially with respect to ...
