Temperature-programmed decomposition has been used to determine the energetics of metalcarbonyl bond dissociation in the surface-mediated decarbonylation of Mo(CO)6 adsorbed on alumina, magnesia, silica, titania, zirconia and zinc oxide. To estimate the influence of the surface microstructure, the reaction was studied on a conventional silica gel and on MCM-41, a silica with uniform cylindrical mesopores. Activation energies for successive decarbonylation steps were calculated from the temperature ...

Partial meniscectomy, which is generally used for the treatment of meniscal tears, can lead to knee joint osteoarthritis. To prevent this important complication, attempting to restore normal knee joint kinematics and biomechanical forces after partial meniscectomy is essential. Implantation of a meniscal scaffold can be useful in this regard, improving the function of the meniscus on knee joint biomechanics after partial meniscectomy. Use of meniscal scaffolds would have specific clinical merit ...

The copolymerization of ethylene with 1,5-hexadiene or 1-hexene was studied with the series of ansa-metallocenes Me2Si(Cp)(9-Flu)ZrCl2 (1), Me2Si(1-Ind)(9-Flu)ZrCl2 (3), and Me2Si(9-Flu)2ZrCl2 (4). 1,5-Hexadiene, a monomer which requires two insertion events to be cyclopolymerized, when copolymerized with ethylene using 3/MAO, gave a copolymer with a novel architecture. When compared with the copolymerization of 1-hexene with ethylene, the observed striking differences between the two copolymers provided ...

Gold(III) chloride catalyzed direct amination of arenes with azodicarboxylates was developed. The new catalytic system was active to a broad range of substrates, and the reaction was carried out under mild conditions. It represents the first catalytic system for the direct amination of electron-deficient arenes with azodicarboxylates to the best of our knowledge. This reaction provides an important approach for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds in pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Push-pull chromophores based on 1-dicyanomethylene-2-chloro-3-aminoindene are readily synthesized. These compounds undergo dramatic colour changes in the presence of metal cations as a result of the interaction of the amino substituent with the analytes. One of these compounds is a selective copper(ii) colorimetric probe in acetonitrile solution, displaying a dramatic colour change upon coordination of the amine group to the metal centre. These compounds are also selective cyanide sensors in acetonitrile ...

There is a huge interest in developing superrepellent surfaces for antifouling and heat-transfer applications. To characterize the wetting properties of such surfaces, the most common approach is to place a millimetric-sized droplet and measure its contact angles. The adhesion and friction forces can then be inferred indirectly using Furmidge’s relation. While easy to implement, contact angle measurements are semiquantitative and cannot resolve wetting variations on a surface. Here, we attach a ...

Electrochromic (EC) materials exhibit colour changes between coloured and colourless states, or between two or more coloured states in response to an external electrical bias. The reversible colour changes of the EC materials are attributed to changes in their absorption behaviors in the UV–visible–near-infrared (NIR) region as a consequence of electrochemical oxidation and reduction. The clear understanding of the underlying fundamental principles of EC materials and their devices allows the colour- ...

A Dual-Domain Carbonic Anhydrase (DDCA) had been sequenced and characterized from the ctenidia (gills) of the giant clam, Tridacna squamosa, which lives in symbiosis with zooxanthellae. DDCA was expressed predominantly in the ctenidium. The complete cDNA coding sequence of DDCA from T. squamosa comprised 1,803 bp, encoding a protein of 601 amino acids and 66.7 kDa. The deduced DDCA sequence contained two distinct α-CA domains, each with a specific catalytic site. It had a high sequence similarity ...

Abstract The present work concerns with the effect of alkanediyl-α,ω-bis(dimethylcetylammonium bromide) gemini surfactants on the reaction rate of ninhydrin with glycyl-glycine. The spectra showed peaks at 400 nm and 570 nm in aqueous and aqueous–micellar media indicating the formation of the same product. Under pseudo-first-order conditions of excess ninhydrin, the reaction followed an irreversible first- and fractional-order kinetics with respect to [Gly-Gly] and [ninhydrin]. Also, the rate constants ( ...

Abstract The effect of gemini (16‐ s ‐16, s = 4, 5, 6) surfactants on the reaction rate of ninhydrin with [Cu(II)‐Gly‐Tyr] + complex was determined using a spectrophotometric technique. The ninhydrin concentration was kept in excess in order to maintain pseudo‐first‐order conditions. The reaction followed irreversible first‐ and fractional‐order kinetics with respect to [Cu(II)‐Gly‐Tyr] + and [ninhydrin], respectively. It is found that gemini surfactants effectively catalyze the reaction. The rate constants ( ...

The reaction showed first- and fractional-order dependencies, respectively, on [complex] and [ninhydrin]. The surfactants used in this reaction are a dicationic gemini and its catalytic behavior was also seen on the reaction rate. It is found that dicationic gemini surfactants are more effective ...

Herein we report a novel, diastereoselective, one-pot, two-step, sequential synthesis of highly functionalized natural product-like spiropyrrolidinochromanones. The process consists of an Ugi four-component condensation of 3-formylchromones with amines, isocyanides, and glyoxylic acids followed by a nucleophilic conjugate addition and intramolecular cyclization. The experimental simplicity and tolerance to a wide variety of substituents makes this method suitable for combinatorial synthesis.

This leads to hydrogen gas evolution in the paint containers and loss of the silvery appearance of the coating. Abstract Summary: A novel experimental set‐up has been devised to measure simultaneously, in real time, the conversion and shrinkage of multi‐acrylates during photopolymerization. The data show that the current practice of assigning the excess volume entirely as excess free volume is inappropriate as this leads to an increasing fractional free volume with conversion. We propose to partition the excess volume into free and occupied volume components. The new model produces satisfactory results. Experimental ...
