J.M.S. Martins,

A study was made of all live births which had been registered in New South Wales by June 30, 1970, and which occurred in the calendar years 1968 and 1969. All references in this paper relate to live births to mothers whose usual residence was within the Sydney Statistical Division (population of 2,713,000 at June 30, 1969). However, in almost all the cases, the same trends are evident in figures for the whole of New South Wales.

Phyllis Passariello,

This paper examines contemporary middle class Mexican recreational tourism through a micro-ethnographic study of tourist behavior at a small beach resort in the state of Chiapas. Majority behavior represents the inversion of aspects of normal behavior, particularly in the deregulation of meal-times, night and day activities, and the rules for play. It is hypothesized that the particular, and comparatively excessive, behaviors described may stem from both the historically antecendant Spanish and ...

David R. Williams,

In the history of cinema exhibition in Britain, the longest running dispute between licensing authorities, the church and the cinema proprietors was that of Sunday opening. The Sunday Observance Act of 1780 forbade premises being used 'for public entertainment or amusement' on Sundays if persons were admitted for money.1 This would seem to have been a catch-all Act for any form of entertainment, but, by usage, and the later passing of the Theatres Act of 1843 the regulation seems to have been applied ...

Using a longitudinal data for about 1800 persons observed between 1986 and 1991, this study investigates the incentive effects on short-term sickness spells of two important regime changes in the social insurance system in Sweden implemented in 1987 and 1991. The results indicate that the rules influenced people's decisions about when to report the beginning and ending of sickness spells. The 1991 reform, which reduced the replacement rate, had a stronger effect on reducing the duration of short- ...

Abstract The perception prevalent in the literature that Australian rainfall records are reasonably uncontaminated by untagged weekend accumulations is reassessed. An objective probabilistic test for untagged accumulations is developed and applied to 181 gauges that have previously been identified as having high‐quality data suitable for long‐term analyses of climate change. As many as 102 of these gauges are found to contain hidden, untagged accumulations, and the overall prevalence of untagged ...
