It is generally well recognised that suspended particulate matter (SPM), from nano-scale particles to sand-sized sediments, can cause serious degradation of aquatic ecosystems. However, at present there is a poor understanding of the SPM conditions that water quality managers should aim to achieve in contrasting environments in order to support good ecological status. In this article, we analyse long-term SPM data collected from a wide range of reference-condition temperate environments in the UK ( ...

Jennifer A. Bartz, Jamil Zaki, Niall Bolger, Kevin N. Ochsner,
Building on animal research, the past decade has witnessed a surge of interest in the effects of oxytocin on social cognition and prosocial behavior in humans. This work has generated considerable excitement about identifying the neurochemical underpinnings of sociality in humans, and discovering compounds to treat social functioning deficits. Inspection of the literature, however, reveals that the effects of oxytocin in the social domain are often weak and/or inconsistent. We propose that this ...

Aonghus McNabola, Niall O’Luanaigh, John Gallagher, Laurence Gill,
An air pollution control device, designed to restrict the amount of particulate matter passing through it, was developed on the principle of aspiration efficiency. The performance of this new form of air pollution control was subsequently assessed in terms of its remediation efficiency for PM2.5 at the ventilation inlet of a medium sized city centre office building. A physical prototype and 3D computational fluid dynamics model were both developed to assess the performance of the device. The results ...

Piotr Bizoń, Edward Malec, Niall Ó Murchadha,
The authors give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of trapped surfaces in spherically symmetric initial data sets. The conditions they obtain show explicitly that the formation of trapped surfaces depends on the degree of concentration and on the average flow of matter. Thus they give an explicit realisation of the so-called 'trapped surface conjecture'.

Abstract This paper analyses how accounting frameworks can affect three important areas of responsibility of many central banks, namely monetary policy, financial stability and banking supervision. The identified effects of accounting rules and accounting information on the activities of a central bank are manifold. First, the effectiveness of monetary policy crucially hinges on the financial independence of a central bank, which can be evidenced, inter alia, by its financial strength. Using a new ...

Abstract Using corn pollen as an analogue for fine particulate organic matter (FPOM), retention characteristics were measured for 13 reaches encompassing three different catchment land‐use classes (pasture, native forest, and exotic pine forest), and five pasture sites along the Mangaotama Stream, New Zealand. The retention coefficients (specific loss rate, m‐1) of reaches having similar positions in the stream continuum did not differ significantly between land‐use types. The retention coefficient ...

The in-vivo mechanical response of neural tissue during impact loading of the head is simulated using geometrically accurate finite element (FE) head models. However, current FE models do not account for the anisotropic elastic material behaviour of brain tissue. In soft biological tissue, there is a correlation between internal microscopic structure and macroscopic mechanical properties. Therefore, constitutive equations are important for the numerical analysis of the soft biological tissues. By ...

We tested the effects of ungulate grazing and nutrient availability on the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions in semi-natural temperate grassland. To do this, soil taken from long term grazed and ungrazed grassland was incubated at four temperatures (4, 10, 15 and 20 °C) with two levels of nutrient (NP) addition. The results showed that the variation in soil CO2 and CH4 emissions was explained by temperature and grazing, with grazing increasing the temperature ...

Voxel based morphometry (VBM) is a widely used technique for studying the structure of the brain. Direct comparisons between the results obtained using VBM and the underlying histology are limited, however. To circumvent the problems inherent in comparing VBM data in vivo with tissue samples that must generally be obtained post-mortem, we chose to consider GABAA receptors, measured using (18)F-flumazenil PET (18F-FMZ-PET), as non-invasive neural markers to be compared with VBM data. Abstract Findings from confederate paradigms predict that mimicry is an adaptive route to social connection for rejection‐sensitive individuals ( L akin, C hartrand, & A rkin, 2008). However, dyadic perspectives predict that whether mimicry leads to perceived connection depends on the rejection sensitivity ( RS ) of both partners in an interaction. We investigated these predictions in 50 college women who completed a dyadic cooperative task in which members were matched or mismatched in being dispositionally ...

Closed expressions are derived for the distributions of resonance widths and Coulomb blockade conductance peak heights in quantum dots for the crossover regime between conserved and broken time-reversal symmetry. The results hold for leads with any number of possibly correlated and inequivalent channels and are obtained through a random matrix ensemble that interpolates between the Gaussian orthogonal and unitary ensembles. For any given value of the transition parameter the distributions are completely ...
