The goal of this study was to design, test, and model cylindrical flow-through control devices used to inactivate airborne microorganisms with non-mercury radiation sources and a reflective coating, through a broad relative humidity (RH) range. Bench-scale tests determined the effectiveness of three different UV-C sources–light emitting diode (LED), xenon, and mercury. In addition to measurements, modeling was performed that combined photon tracing, computational fluid dynamics, and particle tracking ...

Fractures are frequent in childhood and cause considerable morbidity. Previous reports have indicated a variety of potential contributors to fracture risk including low bone mineral content and density, milk avoidance, lack of exercise, asthma, obesity, and a high consumption of carbonated beverages. We wished to test the hypothesis that children who sustain recurrent fractures have a lower bone mass and a higher prevalence of underlying risk factors for fracture than those who fracture once or ...

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United Kingdom, accounting for just under one quarter of all deaths in 1995: 27% among men and 21% among women.1 Although many CHD deaths occur among elderly people, CHD accounts for 31% of male and 13% of female deaths within the 45–64 age group.

Keith Henderson, Jess Pantinople, Kyle McCabe, Hazel L. Richards, Nick Milne,
It has recently been proposed that the caudal curvature (concave caudal side) observed in the radioulna of terrestrial quadrupeds is an adaptation to the habitual action of the triceps muscle which causes cranial bending strains (compression on cranial side). The caudal curvature is proposed to be adaptive because longitudinal loading induces caudal bending strains (increased compression on the caudal side), and these opposing bending strains counteract each other leaving the radioulna less strained. ...

Background Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a rare, severe post-traumatic pain condition affecting distal limbs. Patients who do not spontaneously improve in 12 months are classed as having ‘long-standing CRPS’ and often cannot be effectively treated, leading to a poor prognosis. CRPS is associated with functional autoantibodies. Two small trials, including a randomised controlled trial, have suggested that low-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) may be an effective treatment for some patients. ...

This study explores how curvature in the quokka femur may help to reduce bending strain during locomotion. The quokka is a small wallaby, but the curvature of the femur and the muscles active during stance phase are similar to most quadrupedal mammals. Our hypothesis is that the action of hip extensor and ankle plantarflexor muscles during stance phase place cranial bending strains that act to reduce the caudal curvature of the femur. Knee extensors and biarticular muscles that span the femur longitudinally ...

The objective of this work was to develop a method for repeated same-site measurement of mechanical properties suitable for the detection of degenerative changes in a biologically active explant model after a single blunt impact injury. Focal blunt impact injuries to articular surfaces lead to local cartilage degeneration and loss of mechanical properties. We employed a repeated measurement methodology to determine variations in mechanical same-site properties before and after injury in living cartilage, ...

Longstanding complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is refractory to treatment with established analgesic drugs in most cases, and for many patients, alternative pain treatment approaches, such as with neuromodulation devices or rehabilitation methods, also do not work. The development of novel, effective treatment technologies is, therefore, important. There are preliminary data suggesting that low-dose immunoglobulin treatment may significantly reduce pain from longstanding CRPS.LIPS is a multicentre ( ...

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are associated with an increased risk of miscarriage and preterm birth, even when thyroid function is normal. Small trials indicate that the use of levothyroxine could reduce the incidence of such adverse outcomes. We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate whether levothyroxine treatment would increase live-birth rates among euthyroid women who had thyroid peroxidase antibodies and a history of miscarriage or infertility. A total of 19,585 ...
