Guoqing Xu, Matthew Arnold, Nick Mitchell, Atanas Rountev, Gary Sevitsky,
Many large-scale Java applications suffer from runtime bloat. They execute large volumes of methods, and create many temporary objects, all to execute relatively simple operations. There are large opportunities for performance optimizations in these applications, but most are being missed by existing optimization and tooling technology. While JIT optimizations struggle for a few percent, performance experts analyze deployed applications and regularly find gains of 2x or more. Finding such big gains ...

It is common for large-scale Java applications to suffer memory problems, whether inefficient designs that impede scalability, or lifetime bugs such as leaks. Making sense of heaps with many millions of objects is difficult given the extensive layering, framework reuse, and shared ownership in current applications. We present Yeti, a tool that summarizes memory usage to uncover the costs of design decisions, rather than of lower-level artifacts as in traditional tools, making it possible to quickly ...

The development of interactive video technology offers teacher educators new possibilities for working with student teachers. This article draws on an evaluation of a project in England that used the internet to link a university teacher education faculty with local partner schools in which remotely operated Internet Protocol cameras and microphones were mounted in classrooms. During sessions at the university, tutors were able to make use of contemporaneous examples of classroom activity to illustrate ...

Applications often have large runtime memory requirements. In some cases, large memory footprint helps accomplish an important functional, performance, or engineering requirement. A large cache, for example, may ameliorate a pernicious performance problem. In general, however, finding a good balance between memory consumption and other requirements is quite challenging. To do so, the development team must distinguish effective from excessive use of memory. We introduce health signatures to enable ...

Large applications often suffer from excessive memory consumption. The nature of these heaps, their scale and complex interconnections, makes it difficult to find the low hanging fruit. Techniques relying on dominance or allocation tracking fail to account for sharing, and overwhelm users with small details. More fundamentally, a programmer still needs to know whether high levels of consumption are too high. We present a solution that discovers a small set of high-impact memory problems, by detecting ...

Our research group has analyzed many industrial, framework-based applications. In these applications, simple functionality often requires excessive runtime activity. It is increasingly difficult to assess if and how inefficiencies can be fixed. Much of this activity involves the transformation of information, due to framework couplings. We present an approach to modeling and quantifying behavior in terms of what transformations accomplish. We structure activity into dataflow diagrams that capture ...

Abstract The study of desistance from crime has come of age in recent years, and there are now several, competing theories to account for the ability of long-term offenders to abstain from criminal behavior. Most prominently, recent explanations have borrowed elements from informal social control theory, differential association theory and cognitive psychology. In the following, we argue that labeling theory may be a neglected factor in understanding the desistance process. Drawing on interview ...
