A mild and new procedure for the selective cleavage of an alkoxycarbonyl group (Boc, CBz) in N,N-dicarbamoyl-protected amino compounds is described. The method is based on the use of lithium bromide in acetonitrile and is compatible with a large range of other functionalities present in the substrates. Compared with other reported methodologies, the procedure is particularly useful for the Cbz-selective cleavage in N,N-Ts,Cbz-diprotected amines. A rationalization of the selectivity supported by ab ...

A strong effort has been devoted recently toward processing of metal–ceramic composites with tailored microstructure by colloidal methods. The aim of this work is to optimize the rheological behavior of concentrated Al 2 O 3 –nickel (Ni) aqueous suspensions and further slip casting in order to obtain dense green composites. Compositions with Ni relative contents ranging from 5 to 75 vol% were prepared from suspensions with high solids loadings (50 vol%) by adjusting the colloidal stability of each ...

The colloidal behavior of nickel aqueous suspensions is studied and compared to that of NiO suspensions. Under acidic conditions, nickel readily dissolves, but no dissolution takes place at basic pH. Zeta potential is studied as a function of pH, showing that the isoelectric point (IEP) occurs at pH 3.5-4. Above the IEP there is a zeta potential plateau, which is associated to the predominance of NiO(OH) species. At pH 9 a new decrease in zeta potential is associated to NiO predominance. XPS studies ...

The consecutive treatment of N-Cbz amino protected compounds with LiHMDS and CbzCl provides a practical method for the preparation of N,N-benzyloxycarbamoyl (N,N-di-Cbz) derivatives in good yield. When alpha-amino acids are used the protection occurs without racemization. The method is compatible with a wide range of other functional and protecting groups. The procedure is also valid for the synthesis of mixed N,N-carbamoyl derivatives.

The surface charge of bacteria is closely related to their envelope structure and interactions with surfaces in natural environments. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of experimental conditions on the zeta (ζ) potential of mycobacterial cells as a measure of their cell-surface charge. We observed that Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2155 cells at physiological conditions displayed a high and stable ζ potential (−42.9 ± 5.9 mV) which increased from the late-exponential phase of growth and at ...

Purpose: Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is used in cases of severe respiratory and/or circulatory failure over periods of several days to several weeks. Its circuitry requires a closely monitored anticoagulation therapy that is empirically supported by activated clotting time (ACT)—a method often associated with large inter- and intraindividual variability. We aimed to compare the measurement of heparin activity with ACT and the direct measurement of the heparin activity (anti-Xa) in a ...

The theory to predict ignition of solid fuels exposed to incident radiant heat fluxes has permitted to obtain simple correlations of the ignition delay time with the incident heat flux which are useful in practical engineering applications. However, the theory was developed under the assumption that radiation does not penetrate into the solid phase. In the case of semi-transparent solids, where the penetration of radiation plays an important role in the heating and subsequent ignition of the fuel, ...

Naegleria fowleri causes a deadly disease called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Even though PAM is still considered a rare disease, the number of reported cases worldwide has been increasing each year. Among the factors to be considered for this, awareness about this disease, and also global warming, as these amoebae thrive in warm water bodies, seem to be the key factors. Until present, no fully effective drugs have been developed to treat PAM, and the current options are amphotericin ...

Therefore, there is a need to find new lead compounds with high potency against parasites and low toxicity in patients. In the present work, ...

Chagas disease and leishmaniasis are neglected tropical diseases caused by kinetoplastid parasites of Trypanosoma and Leishmania genera that affect poor and remote populations in developing countries. The continuous relationship between blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular events makes the distinction between elevated BP and hypertension based on arbitrary cut-off values for BP. Even mild BP elevations manifesting as high-normal BP have been associated with cardiovascular risk. We hypothesize that persistent elevated BP increases atherosclerotic plaque development.
