Abstract Background Removing total hip arthroplasty (THA) from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) inpatient-only list allows Medicare to cover outpatient THA, driving hospitals to recommend outpatient surgery for appropriate patients and raising safety concerns over which patients' admissions should remain inpatient. Thus, we aimed to determine the influence of patient-related and procedure-related risk factors as predictors of >1-day Length of Stay (LOS) after THA. Methods A prospective cohort ...

The reduction of NO(•) to HNO/NO(-) under biologically compatible conditions has always been thought as unlikely, mostly because of the negative reduction potential: E°(NO(•),H(+)/HNO) = -0.55 V vs NHE at physiological pH. Nonetheless, during the past decade, several works hinted at the possible NO-to-HNO conversion mediated by moderate biological reductants. Very recently, we have shown that the reaction of NO(•) with ascorbate and aromatic alcohols occurs through a proton-coupled nucleophilic attack ( ...

The role of NO in biology is well established. However, an increasing body of evidence suggests that azanone (HNO), could also be involved in biological processes, some of which are attributed to NO. In this context, one of the most important and yet unanswered questions is whether and how HNO is produced in vivo. A possible route concerns the chemical or enzymatic reduction of NO. In the present work, we have taken advantage of a selective HNO sensing method, to show that NO is reduced to HNO by ...

The transition toward an electricity‐driven world is testing electrical contact materials to their limits. Specifically, new alternatives are needed where composites that sacrificed conductivity in exchange for reduced weldability and higher heat dissipation sufficed. However, the reported electrical conductivity measurements show no clear ...

Abstract Ischemic injury occurs when the brain is deprived of blood flow, preventing cells from receiving essential nutrients. The injury core is the brain region directly deprived and is surrounded by the peri-infarct area, the region with recovery potential. In the peri-infarct area neurons undergo acute loss of dendritic spines, which modifies synaptic plasticity and determines neuronal survival. Astrocytes can be protective or detrimental to the ischemic injury response depending on the specific ...
