Kombucha is a fermented tea with a long history of production and consumption. It has been gaining popularity thanks to its refreshing taste and assumed beneficial properties. The microbial community responsible for tea fermentation-acetic acid bacteria (AAB), yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria (LAB)-is mainly found embedded in an extracellular cellulosic matrix located at the liquid-air interphase. To optimize the production process and investigate the contribution of individual strains, a collection ...

Porous tantalum nonmodular tibial components for TKA were introduced in 1999. We revised three well-fixed tantalum tibial trays. For removal, we used osteotomes and revision oscillating saw blades. Removal of the components was laborious and resulted in generation of abundant tantalum debris that seeded the periarticular soft tissues despite meticulous protection with gauze. The retained metallic debris that is visible on postoperative radiographs has the potential for generation of third-body wear. ...

Abstract Background: Recent morphologic research has demonstrated the presence of nerve fibres of different diameters in the human optic nerve. The purpose of this study was to investigate age-related changes in fibres of the human optic nerve. Methods: We studied the left optic nerve of 50 male cadaveric donors, 16 aged 18 to 22 years (mean 20 [standard deviation 1.2] years) and 34 aged 68 to 76 years (mean 72 [standard deviation 1.6] years). The samples were carefully harvested during autopsy from the intracranial ...

In a previous study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed age-related changes in the rat retina. We carried out a study to evaluate age-related changes in the human retina.Samples of fresh retinal tissue obtained from younger (age 22 years or less) and older (age 66 years or more) donors were studied by means of traditional histologic methods and by SEM. Eight retinas were obtained from four donors whose corneas had been used for transplantation, and four retinas were obtained from four subjects ...

Background: Ultrastructural, morphological modifications in the microvessels of the optic nerve head were studied in human eyes with normal intraocular pressure (IOP), with slightly increased IOP, and with strongly increased IOP. Moreover, the distribution of ß-adrenergic receptors was analyzed in the same samples. Methods: Six enucleated human eyes were studied. Small pieces of the optic nerve head and of iridocorneal angle (including trabecular meshwork) were dissected immediately after autopsy. ...

Summary A quantitative analysis of peptidergic nerve fibres located in the trabecular meshwork of the guinea pig has been performed. Our results confirm that this structure contains VIP‐, NPY‐ and substance P‐like immunoreactivity as major neurotransmitters. These findings were obtained using immunohistochemical techniques. For this purpose serial sections of the eye were stained by immunohistochemistry for each of three neurotransmitters and stained sections were analysed by quantitative image ...

In this study, two strains of Schizosaccharomyces pombe (NCAIM Y01474T and SBPS) and two strains of Schizosaccharomyces japonicus (DBVPG 6274T, M23B) were investigated for their capacity to ferment apple juice and influence the volatile compounds of cider compared to Saccharomyces cerevisiae EC1118. The ethanol tolerance and deacidification capacity of Schizosaccharomyces yeasts could make them potential substitutes for the commonly used S. cerevisiae starter cultures. Despite different time courses ( ...

Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is considered a valid second-line treatment for acute and chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD).Ninety-four patients with acute GVHD (aGVHD) (n = 45) and chronic GVHD (cGVHD) (n = 49), retrospectively recruited in 6 Italian centers, were submitted to ECP for second-line treatment. At the time of ECP, 22 (49%) and 23 (51%) of 45 patients with aGHVD were nonresponsive and in partial remission (PR) after steroids, respectively, and all the 49 patients with cGVHD were steroid ...

Abstract This joint report from the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SIOT) and the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP) aims for a consensus around the scientific rationale and clinical strategy for the management of osteoporotic patients affected by periodontitis who are undergoing anti-resorptive (AR) therapy to manage the risk of the occurrence of a medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). Osteoporosis and periodontitis are chronic diseases with ...

Abstract The evaluation of cell parietal components of yeasts is an important criterium for the selection of wine starters since they play a key role in the vinification process. The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the cell wall composition of four industrial (BM45, D47, EC1118, K1) and three native Saccharomyces cerevisiae (MY8, MY11, PEDRO2000E) wine strains by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy and ATR-FTIR microspectroscopy. A statistically significant variability ...

The p¯ stopping power in helium from 1 keV kinetic energy is evaluated. Contrary to the effect observed around and below the maximum, Obelix data indicate a p¯ stopping power higher than that for proton, the difference being of the order of 15±5% at ≈700 keV. The result contributes to assert the fundamental difference between p¯ stoppings in the simplest gases (He, H2) and in solid targets below some MeV.

Abstract Pasifika student engagement and achievement remain an ongoing concern in Aotearoa New Zealand with inequitable outcomes a reality. This article opens with a short story about Amosa, a Samoan student, to highlight some of the ways inequitable outcomes can become a reality in educational contexts where curriculum content is disconnected from culture. We offer our introductory conceptualisation of a pedagogy of the heart situated in the field of Pasifika educational outcomes, as a possible ...

Data on $\overline{p}$ slowing down and capture in helium at 1 and $0.2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mb}$ at room temperature are presented and compared to the corresponding previously publicated data in molecular hydrogen and deuterium. A Monte Carlo simulation containing a low-energy extrapolation of measured $\overline{p}$ electronic stopping power in helium gas, screened Rutherford collisions, and simple cascade mechanisms is able to reproduce the gross features of the data, but cannot explain ...

Malnutrition is common after allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (alloHSCT), and interventions directed to correct nutritional status are warranted to improve transplant outcomes. In this prospective study, an oral polymeric formulation enriched with TGF-β2 (TE-OPF) was explored to correct malnutrition according to Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). TE-OPF was proposed to 51 consecutive patients who received transplants at our institution for hematological malignancies, ...

Abstract Introduction: Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is considered safe and effective in patients with HIV-associated lymphoma (HIV-Ly). The reported studies usually analyze togheter different histological subtypes, including classical Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and a variety of aggressive non Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and different indications for ASCT, and report composite outcomes. Aim: We report our single center experience on a large single institution series of patients (pts) with HIV-Ly ...
