Martin R. Higgs, Valerie G. Preston, Nigel D. Stow,

The UL15, UL28 and UL33 proteins of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) are thought to comprise a terminase complex responsible for cleavage and packaging of the viral genome into pre-assembled capsids. Immunofluorescence studies confirmed that shortly after infection with wild-type HSV-1 these three proteins localize to viral DNA replication compartments within the nucleus, identified by the presence of the single-stranded DNA-binding protein, ICP8. In cells infected with either UL28- or UL33-null ...

Objective. Laser surface modification of platinum (Pt) electrodes was investigated for use in neuroprosthetics. Surface modification was applied to increase the surface area of the electrode and improve its ability to transfer charge within safe electrochemical stimulation limits. Approach. Electrode arrays were laser micromachined to produce Pt electrodes with smooth surfaces, which were then modified with four laser patterning techniques to produce surface structures which were nanosecond patterned, ...

Visual prostheses with a high number of electrodes are now of great research interest driven by the successful recent clinical trials. High channel devices are confronted with numerous challenges many of which can be addressed by adopting a multi-implant architecture. However now the difficulties lie in ensuring safety of the inter-implant interface by addressing the associated risks, often neglected in the past. This paper presents a multi-implant architecture-based 98-channel neurostimulator with ...

Plain English summary Researchers test treatments to ensure these work and are safe. They do this by studying the effects that treatments have on patients by measuring outcomes, such as pain and quality of life. Often research teams measure different outcomes even though each team is studying the same condition. This makes it hard to compare the findings from different studies and it can reduce the accuracy of the treatment advice available to patients. Increasingly, researchers are tackling this ...

Studies carried out on nine farms in north-west England indicated that fenbendazole treatment of adult winter calving dairy cows in the dry period caused an overall increase of 173 kg in their subsequent lactation yield. There was some evidence to suggest that a correlation existed between pasture Ostertagia ostertagi larval burdens and subsequent serum pepsinogen and milk yield responses post treatment. Marked interherd and regional differences existed in the milk yield response to anthelmintic ...

Nigel Preston,

During the spawning season of the estuarine prawn Metapenaeus bennettae (Racek & Dall), laboratory and field experiments were conducted to examine the combined effects of temperature and salinity on hatching success of eggs and the survival, growth and development of larvae. Response surface analysis showed that optimal levels of temperature and salinity for maximum hatching success varied depending on conditions during spawning. Similarly, temperature and salinity conditions that produced maximum ...

Site selection for aquaculture planning is a complex task involving the identification of areas that are economically, socially and environmentally suitable, available to aquaculture and commercially practicable. This paper reports upon a study into the use of a geographic information system (GIS) to assist in aquaculture planning. Using a case study in the site selection for land-based shrimp farming within the Australian coastal zone, we demonstrate that a GIS has potential to assist aquaculture ...

Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis is a rapid, efficient technique for detecting large numbers of DNA markers for linkage analysis. We have used AFLP markers in a two-way pseudo-testcross strategy to generate genetic maps of a Penaeus japonicus family. A two-stage selective genetic mapping strategy was applied in this study. The initial stage involved the linkage mapping on 46 progeny from two tails (top and bottom 6%) of the size distribution of an intermediate cross family (F1 ...

This study examined the operation of an intensive tropical shrimp farm in relation to the nitrogen (N) budget and the N components of the discharged effluent. Weekly samples were taken for total N (TN) concentration from the farm intake and discharge water over a 10-month period. A N budget was calculated based on TN data, continuous datalogger records of water exchange volumes, and farm records for feed addition, harvest and sediment removal. TN levels in the intake water were low throughout the ...

Despite large numbers of putative microsatellites currently listed in databases for Penaeus monodon, there are no publications on assessing these markers for multiplexed high throughput systems either for fingerprinting or population genetics study purposes in P. monodon. Accordingly, we started our investigation on the development of high throughput systems for P. monodon. Ninety publicly-available P. monodon microsatellite sequences were initially screened for suitability. They were assessed for ...
