Low cancer awareness may contribute to delayed diagnosis and poor cancer survival. We aimed to quantify socio-demographic differences in cancer symptom awareness and barriers to symptomatic presentation in the English population. Using a uniquely large data set (n=49 270), we examined the association of cancer symptom awareness and barriers to presentation with age, gender, marital status and socio-economic position (SEP), using logistic regression models to control for confounders. The youngest and ...

Campaigns aimed at raising cancer awareness and encouraging early presentation have been implemented in England. However, little is known about whether people with low cancer awareness and increased barriers to seeking medical help have worse cancer survival, and whether there is a geographical variation in cancer awareness and barriers in England. From population-based surveys (n=35 308), using the Cancer Research UK Cancer Awareness Measure, we calculated the age- and sex-standardised symptom awareness ...

Ethnic differences in cancer symptom awareness and barriers to seeking medical help in the English population are not fully understood. We aimed to quantify these differences, to help develop more effective health campaigns, tailored to the needs of different ethnic groups. Using a large national data set (n=38 492) of cross-sectional surveys that used the Cancer Research UK Cancer Awareness Measure, we examined how cancer symptom awareness and barriers varied by ethnicity, controlling for socio- ...

Abstract Aim Chronic diseases often occur simultaneously and tend to be associated with adverse health outcomes, but limited research has been undertaken to understand their role in lung cancer mortality. Therefore, this study aims to describe the prevalence and patterns of having one (comorbidity) or ≥ 2 chronic diseases (multimorbidity) among lung cancer patients in Spain, and to examine the association between comorbidity or multimorbidity and short-term mortality risk at six months after cancer ...

Microscopic signatures of nuclear ground-state shape phase transitions in Nd isotopes are studied using excitation spectra and collective wave functions obtained by diagonalization of a five-dimensional Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom, with parameters determined by constrained self-consistent relativistic mean-field calculations for triaxial shapes. As a function of the physical control parameter, the number of nucleons, energy gaps between the ground state ...

Bubble nuclei are characterized by a depletion of their central density. Their existence is examined within three different theoretical frameworks: the shell model and nonrelativistic and relativistic microscopic mean-field approaches. We analyze $^{34}\mathrm{Si}$ and $^{22}\mathrm{O}$ as possible candidates for proton and neutron bubble nuclei, respectively. In the case of $^{22}\mathrm{O}$, we observe a significant model dependence, thereby calling into question the bubble structure of $^{22}\mathrm{O}$. ...

The framework of relativistic energy density functionals is extended to include correlations related to the restoration of broken symmetries and fluctuations of collective variables. A new implementation is developed for the solution of the eigenvalue problem of a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom, with parameters determined by constrained self-consistent relativistic mean-field calculations for triaxial shapes. The model is tested ...

The relativistic proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation ($\mathit{pn}$-RQRPA) is applied in the calculation of total muon capture rates on a large set of nuclei from $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ to $^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$, for which experimental values are available. The microscopic theoretical framework is based on the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model for the nuclear ground state, and transitions to excited states are calculated using the $\mathit{pn}$-RQRPA. The calculation is fully consistent, ...

First, we briefly outline some aspects of the starting project to design non‐empirical energy functionals based on low‐momentum vacuum interactions and many‐body perturbation theory. Second, we present results obtained within an approximation of such a scheme where the pairing part of the energy density functional is constructed at first order in the nuclear plus Coulomb two‐body interaction. We discuss in detail the physics of the odd‐even mass staggering and the necessity to compute actual odd‐ ...
