Background Anemia is linked to impaired outcome in patients with cardiovascular diseases. We sought to characterize the impact of baseline anemia on mid‐term outcome after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Methods and results Data of 1201 consecutive TAVI patients were retrospectively analyzed. Baseline anemia was defined according to the WHO (hemoglobin <12g/dl [female], <13g/dl [male]). It was prevalent in 59.0% of patients and associated with a higher preoperative risk (STS‐PROM 7.8 ± 5. ...

Abstract. Efficiently reducing natural hazard risks requires a thorough understanding of the costs of natural hazards. Current methods to assess these costs employ a variety of terminologies and approaches for different types of natural hazards and different impacted sectors. This may impede efforts to ascertain comprehensive and comparable cost figures. In order to strengthen the role of cost assessments in the development of integrated natural hazard management, a review of existing cost assessment ...

In this study, the physiological and behavioural factors that influence infestation levels of wing mites on a large sample of Daubenton's bat (Myotis daubentonii) were investigated. This is the first study to present a comprehensive data set that includes male M. daubentonii over the entire seasonal activity period. In males, parasite load increased during spermatogenesis, which can be explained by high testosterone levels acting as an immunosuppressant. Prevalence rates and infestation levels in ...

Abstract Mammals can be aligned along a slow‐fast life‐history continuum and a low–high metabolic rate continuum based on their traits. Small non‐volant mammals occupy the fast/high end in both continua with high reproductive rates and short life spans linked with high mass‐specific metabolic rates. Bats occupy the high end of the metabolic continuum, but the slow end of the life‐history continuum with low reproductive rates and long life spans. Typically, both continua are linked, and similar life‐ ...

The functional link between food as an energy source and metabolizable energy is the digestive tract. The digestive organs may change in size, structure, or retention time in response to energetic demands of the animal. Very efficient digestive tracts may be better at processing food but require higher energetic investments for maintenance even when post-absorptive. These costs influence the resting metabolic rate (RMR) that is defined as the energy necessary to fuel vital metabolic functions in ...

This study investigates the factors driving foraging behavior of Daubenton’s bats ( Myotis daubentonii (Kuhl, 1817)). We analysed the importance of food availability, energy demand, and intraspecific competition in regulating foraging activity and the selection of near versus distant foraging sites. At two foraging patches, insect abundance, foraging activity, and the number of foraging individuals were monitored using sticky traps, telemetry, spotlight counting, and light sticks. Population size was ...

Studies of immunity in bat species are rare. However, it is important to determine immunological variations to identify factors influencing the health status of these endangered mammals from an evolutionary, ecological, conservation, and public health point of view. Immunity is highly variable and can be influenced by both internal (e.g. hormone levels, energy demand) and external factors (e.g. pathogens, climate). As bats have some peculiar ecological, energetic, and putative immunological characteristics, ...

Evidence from neuroimaging studies suggests a critical role of hippocampus and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in associative relative to item encoding. Here, we investigated similarities and differences in functional brain correlates for associative and item memory as a function of encoding instruction. Participants received either incidental (animacy judgments) or intentional encoding instructions while fMRI was employed during the encoding of associations and items. In a subsequent recognition task, ...

Abstract Many forest‐dwelling bats spend their diurnal inactivity period in tree cavities. During this time bats can save energy through heterothermy. A heterothermic response (torpor) is characterized by a lowered body temperature, reduced metabolic rate, and reduction of other physiological processes, and can be influenced by the microclimatic conditions of roost cavities. The thermal and physical characteristics of roosts used by the sympatric, ecologically, and morphologically similar bat species ...

Ecoimmunology of wild animals becomes increasingly important. However, there are methodical limitations, especially when working on small mammals, e.g. small sample volume and acute stress associated with capture, handling and sampling that can influence immune parameters. The plasma bacterial killing assay measures innate humoral immune responses, mainly complement activity. It is a powerful tool with many methodical advantages. To avoid investigation of artefacts in future ecoimmunological studies ...

Bats have a very high mass-specific energy demand due to small size and active flight. European bat species are mostly insectivorous and the morphology of the gastrointestinal tract should be adapted accordingly. This study investigated the general anatomy by histology and the function by analysing carbohydrate distribution in particular of the mucus of the GI tract of the insectivorous bat Pipistrellus pipistrellus. The GI tracts of three individuals were dissected, fixed in formaldehyde, and ...
