We deduce from a rooted tree in the disk a slalom divide and a slalom knot. A slalom knot is either the local link of a simple plane curve singularity of type A_2n, E_6, E_8 or a fibered hyperbolic knot with very special monodromy.

We show the existence of toric resolution tower for an irreducible curve singularity which is explicitly described by Tschirnhausen polynomials. We deduce for a smooth affine plane curve from its topology restrictions for its singularity at infinity. For instance, we discribe the singularities at infinity (up to equisingular deformation) for curves of genus 0,1 and 2. From this follows an extension of the Abhyankar-Moh-Suzuki theorem to genus 1 and 2.

Complex conjugation on complex space permutes the level sets of a real polynomial function and induces involutions on level sets corresponding to real values. For isolated complex hypersurface singularities with real defining equation we show the existence of a monodromy vector field such that complex conjugation intertwines the local monodromy diffeomorphism with its inverse. In particular, it follows that the geometric monodromy is the composition of the involution induced by complex conjugation ...

The geometric local monodromy of a plane curve singularity is a diffeomorphism of a compact oriented surface with non empty boundary. The monodromy diffeomorphism is a product of right Dehn twists, where the number of factors is equal to the rank of the first homology of the surface. The core curves of the Dehn twists are quadratic vanishing cycles of the singularity. Moreover, the monodromy diffeomorphism decomposes along reduction curves into pieces, which are invariant, such that the restriction ...

The aim of this study was to assess the ability of commonly available red- or blue-light dental sources to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) from photosensitive chemicals that might be useful for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT).Although the use of red diode lasers is well documented, there is limited information on how useful blue-light sources might be for PACT in dental contexts.A diode laser (Periowave; see Table 1 for material and equipment sources) emitting red light (660-675 ...

Disinfection of the tooth pulp-canal system is imperative to successful endodontic therapy. Yet, studies suggest that 30-50% of current endodontic treatments fail from residual bacterial infection. Photodynamic therapy using red-light chromophores (630 nm) to induce antimicrobial death mediated by generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been reported, but red-light also may thermally damage resident tissues. In the current study, we tested the hypothesis that several blue light chromophores (380- ...

We propose a new construction of the real number system, that is built directly upon the additive group of integers and has its roots in the definition due to Henri Poincare [P, pages 230–233,] of the rotation number of an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the circle. The definitions of addition, multiplication and comparison of real numbers are very natural in our setting. The proposed definition of real numbers is illustrated with examples that are irrational, roots of an integral polynomial ...

A divide is a relative generic immersion of a finite union of copies of the unit interval in the unit disk. A divide defines a classical link in the 3- sphere, which is a fibered link if the image of the immersion is connected. We prove in this paper, that the Lefschetz number of the monodromy is 0. This result was known for divides, which correspond to real morsifications of complexe plane curve singularities. The proof uses the space of gradient lines of a morse function.

We have developed novel polymeric photosensitizer prodrugs (PPPs) for improved photodynamic therapy. In PPPs, multiple photosensitizer units are covalently coupled to a polymeric backbone via protease-cleavable peptide linkers. These initially non-photoactive compounds become fluorescent and phototoxic after specific enzymatic cleavage of the peptide linkers and subsequent release of the photosensitizer moieties. Tethering the photosensitizer via a short and easily modified amino acid sequence to ...

Polymeric photosensitizer prodrugs (PPPs) to be selectively activated by urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) have been developed. They are composed of uPA-cleavable photosensitizer-peptide-conjugates covalently attached to a poly-lysine backbone (25 kDa). Phototoxicity of PPPs is efficiently reduced by energy transfer between closely positioned photosensitizers (PSs) on the polymeric backbone. Enzymatic cleavage by uPA, a serine protease that is up-regulated in certain types of cancer, leads to the ...

The introduction of lipophilic derivatives of the naturally occurring heme precursor 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) into photomedicine has led to a true revival of this research area. 5-ALA-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) and fluorescence photodetection (FD) of neoplastic disease is probably one of the most selective cancer treatments currently known in oncology. To date, this method has been assessed experimentally for the treatment of various medical indications. However, the limited local bioavailability ...

We study monodromies of plane curve singularities and pseudo-periodic homeomorphisms of oriented surfaces with boundary using tête-à-tête graphs and twists. A tête-à-tête twist is a generalisation of the classical Dehn twist. We introduce the class of mixed tête-à-tête graphs and twists, and prove that mixed tête-à-tête twists contain the monodromies of irreducible plane curve singularities. In a sequel paper, the fourth author and B. Sigurdsson have extended this to the reducible case.

ABSTRACT A targeting strategy based on the selective enzyme‐mediated activation of polymeric photosensitizer prodrugs (PPP) within pathological tissue has led to the development of agents with the dual ability to detect and treat cancer. Herein, a detailed study of a simple model system for these prodrugs is described. We prepared “first‐generation” PPP by directly tethering the photosensitizer (PS) pheophorbide a to poly‐( l )‐lysine via epsilon amide links and observed that by increasing the number ...
