Exposure of 1-alkynyl[p-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl](tetrafluoroborato)-λ3-bromanes to sodium benzenesulfinate or sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate in dichloromethane at 0 °C under argon resulted in tandem Michael–carbene insertion reactions to produce 1-sulfonylcyclopentenes selectively, with concomitant formation of a small amount of rearranged 1-alkynyl sulfones.

Ion transfer across the polarized interface between a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) or room-temperature molten salt, tetrahexylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (THAC(1)C(1)N), and water has been studied voltammetrically using a micro liquid-liquid interface formed at the orifice of a glass capillary micropipette. A small current of nanoampere level circumvents the problem of the iR drop in the viscous ionic liquid phase. Voltammograms for the transfer of moderately hydrophilic ions, ...

The polarized potential window (ppw) of 450 mV is available at the interface between water (W) and the room-temperature molten salt (RTMS) that consists of tetraoctylammonium cations and trifluoromethylsulfonylnonafluoro-butylsulfonylimide anions. The ppw at the interface between W and RTMS made of several combinations of hydrophobic cations and anions is correlated with the standard ion-transfer potentials of the ions at the 1,2-dichloroethane | W interface. This correlation is useful not only to predict ...

Analysis of acetylation and tri-methylation of the same residue of histone molecules might identify a subset of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with aggressive behavior. In the present study, we examined acetylation and tri-methylation of lysine 27 on histone H3 (H3K27ac and H3K27me3, respectively) because these two modifications are known to exhibit opposite effects (enhancing and silencing) on gene expression. Neoplastic and non-neoplastic tissues from 198 HCC cases were immunostained with specific ...

We derive the cosmological matching conditions for the homogeneous and isotropic background and for linear perturbations in Horndeski's most general second-order scalar-tensor theory. In general relativity, the matching is done in such a way that the extrinsic curvature is continuous across the transition hypersurface. This procedure is generalized so as to incorporate the mixing of scalar and gravity kinetic terms in the field equations of Horndeski's theory. Our matching conditions have a wide ...

Reported here for the first time are the synthesis, isolation, and characterization of hypervalent beta-haloalkenyl-lambda3-bromanes. Exposure of terminal alkynes to p-trifluoromethylphenyl(difluoro)-lambda3-bromane activated by BF3-i-Pr2O resulted in fluoro-lambda3-bromanation of the triple bonds in a Markovnikov fashion, yielding (E)-beta-fluoroalkenyl-lambda3-bromanes stereoselectively in good yields. 5-Chloro-1-pentynes undergo domino lambda3-bromanation-chlorine shift-fluorination or lambda3- ...

Colon cancer is a complex disease affected by a combination of genetic and epigenetic factors. Here we demonstrate that nardilysin (N-arginine dibasic convertase; NRDC), a metalloendopeptidase of the M16 family, regulates intestinal tumorigenesis via its nuclear functions. NRDC is highly expressed in human colorectal cancers. Deletion of the Nrdc gene in ApcMin mice crucially suppressed intestinal tumor development. In ApcMin mice, epithelial cell-specific deletion of Nrdc recapitulated the tumor ...

Temporal description logics (TDLs) have been studied by many researchers (see e.g., [1, 10] for surveys and [4, 2, 15] for recent or important results). These TDLs are, however, not compatible in the following sense: these are not embeddable into the standard (non-temporal) description logics (DLs), and hence the existing algorithms for testing satisfiability in the standard DLs are not available for these TDLs. Such a compatibility issue is important for obtaining reusable and practical algorithms for ...

Abstract Background TAS-102 plus bevacizumab is an anticipated combination regimen for patients who have metastatic colorectal cancer. However, evidence supporting its use for this indication is limited. We compared the cost-effectiveness of TAS-102 plus bevacizumab combination therapy with TAS-102 monotherapy for patients with chemorefractory metastatic colorectal cancer. Method Markov decision modeling using treatment costs, disease-free survival, and overall survival was performed to examine ...

Abstract Activation of N -methyl-d-aspartic acid (NMDA) glutamate receptors (NMDARs) is required for long-term potentiation (LTP) of excitatory synaptic transmission at hippocampal CA1 synapses, the proposed cellular mechanisms of learning and memory. We demonstrate here that a brief bath co-application of a low concentration of NMDA, an agonist of NMDARs, and the selective antagonist of NR2B-containing NMDARs, (α R, β S)-α-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-β-methyl-4-(phenylmethyl)-1-piperidinepropanol (Ro25-6981), to hippocampal ...

Abstract. Purpose: Patients with epiretinal membrane sometimes complain of impaired central visual function, despite good best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), as measured by visual acuity (VA) charts. Here, we evaluate early epiretinal membrane–induced changes in central VA. Methods: Subjects were 72 eyes of 36 patients with epiretinal membrane in only one eye and a BCVA in each eye better than 1.0, as measured by conventional Landolt C chart, at the Retina Division Clinic of the Department of Ophthalmology, ...

Intron retention (IR) is an important regulatory mechanism that affects gene expression and protein functions. Using klotho mice at the pre-symptomatic state, we discovered that retained-introns accumulated in several organs including the liver and that among these retained introns in the liver a subset was recovered to the normal state by a Japanese traditional herbal medicine. This is the first report of IR recovery by a medicine. IR-recovered genes fell into two categories: those involved in liver- ...

The fatigue behavior of those HDPE films under constant strain amplitude has been investigated based on dynamic viscoelastic and small angle light scattering (SALS) measurements during the fatigue process. Objective Stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus by implanted electrodes (deep brain stimulation [DBS]) is performed to suppress symptoms of Parkinson's disease. However, postoperative wound dehiscence and infection can require removal of the implanted electrode leads. Methods First, components of the DBS system were removed except for the electrode lead and thorough debridement ...

Glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL) plays an important role in the intracellular detoxification of cisplatin (CDDP). GCL is composed of a modifier or light chain subunit (GCLM) and a catalytic or heavy chain subunit (GCLC). Previously, we showed that the GCL subunits enhanced CDDP-resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) xenografts. In small cell lung cancer (SCLC), it is unclear whether the GCL subunits are essential to CDDP-resistance. We examined the gene expression of GCLM and GCLC in four human ...
