To clarify the diagnostic impact of liver fibrosis except for cirrhosis identified using shear wave elastography (SWE) in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients, and to compare the performance in diagnosing liver fibrosis among SWE and liver fibrosis indices.A total of 55 CHC patients who underwent liver biopsy were analyzed. The diagnostic performance for identifying significant liver fibrosis (F2-F3) for SWE, FIB-4 index, aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) and Forns' index was assessed ...

We investigated the ability of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to prevent high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Male C57BL/6J mice were fed standard chow (5.3% fat content), an HFD (32.0% fat content) or an HFD + EPA (1 g/kg/day EPA for the last 6 weeks) for 12 weeks. Serum total cholesterol, hepatic triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were significantly increased in the HFD group, in comparison with those of normal mice (p < 0.01). In contrast, hepatic triglyceride ...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common reason for progressive dementia in the elderly. It has been shown that disorders of the mammalian/mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathways are related to the AD. On the other hand, diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for the cognitive dysfunction. The pathogenesis of the neuronal impairment caused by diabetic hyperglycemia is intricate, which contains neuro-inflammation and/or neurodegeneration and dementia. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) ...

Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) may cause oxidative stress which is involved in aging and in the pathogenesis of various human diseases. Whereas unregulated levels of the ROS may be harmful, regulated basal level of ROS are even necessary to support cellular functions as a second messenger for homeostasis under physiological conditions. Therefore, redox medicine could develop as a new therapeutic concept for human health-benefits. Here, we introduce the involvement of ROS on the crossroads ...

To clarify whether mutations in the large T gene encoded by Merkel cell polyomavirus affect the expression and function of large T antigen in Merkel cell carcinoma cases, we investigated the expression of large T antigen in vitro and in vivo. Immunohistochemistry using a rabbit polyclonal antibody revealed that large T antigen was expressed in the nuclei of Merkel cell carcinoma cells with Merkel cell polyomavirus infection. Deletion mutant analyses identified an Arg–Lys–Arg–Lys sequence (amino acids ...

Octahedral and decahedral Au@Ag core-shell nanocrystals have been prepared in high yields using a two-step reduction method. In the first step, octahedral or decahedral Au core seeds were prepared by reducing HAuCl4·4H2O in tetraethylene glycol (TEG) under microwave (MW) heating or in diethylene glycol (DEG) under oil-bath heating, respectively, in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a polymer surfactant. In the second step, Ag shells were overgrown on these Au seeds in N,N-dimethylformamide ( ...

Epigenetics contains various mechanisms by which cells employ to regulate the transcription of many DNAs. Histone acetylation is an obvious example of the epigenetic mechanism regulating the expression of several genes by changing chromatin accessibility. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are a class of enzymes that play a critical role in the epigenetic regulation by deacetylation of histone proteins. Inhibitors of the histone deacetylase could result in hyperacetylation of histones, which eventually ...

Abstract A comparative study was carried out on the degradation of methyl orange (MO) by TiO 2 and Au/TiO 2 photocatalysts in neutral and acidic solutions. Au/TiO 2 photocatalysts with an Au : Ti atomic ratio of 1.5±0.1% : 98.5±0.1% were prepared by using a microwave‐polyol method in the presence of P25 TiO 2 . Initial degradation rates of MO by TiO 2 and Au/TiO 2 were 0.13 and 0.22 min −1 at pH 7, whereas they increased to 0.96 and 3.06 min −1 at pH 2, respectively. These results indicate that the MO degradation ...

Forensic dentistry identifies deceased individuals by comparing postmortem dental charts, oral-cavity pictures and dental X-ray images with antemortem records. However, conventional forensic dentistry methods are time-consuming and thus unable to rapidly identify large numbers of victims following a large-scale disaster. Our goal is to automate the dental filing process by using intraoral scanner images. In this study, we generated and evaluated an artificial intelligence-based algorithm that classified ...

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major cause of end-stage renal disease, and therapeutic options for preventing its progression are insufficient. The number of patients with DN has been increasing in Asian countries because of westernization of dietary lifestyle, which may be associated with the following changes in gut microbiota. Alterations in the gut microbiota composition can lead to an imbalanced gastrointestinal environment that promotes abnormal production of metabolites and/or inflammatory ...

ABSTRACT Turner syndrome is associated with an X chromosome abnormality in women and is characterized by infantilism, congenital webbed neck, and cubitus valgus. The aim of this study was to determine the maxillofacial morphology and oral characteristics of Japanese girls (mean age, 8.5 years) with Turner syndrome and early mixed dentition. Lateral cephalograms obtained at the first visit were used to analyze maxillofacial morphology. Oral characteristics were identified using orthopantomograms, ...

21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) is the most common type of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. In addition to the clinical problems caused by adrenal insufficiency and androgen excess, a risk for obesity and metabolic syndrome during young adulthood is a major ramification of the disease. Although glucocorticoid therapy is very likely to be one of the contributory factors, the precise causes of the metabolic status of adult 21-OHD patients remain to be clarified. Previously we reported that 21-OHD ...

Several data have shown that psychiatric disorders are associated with an altered composition of gut microbiota. Some of the metabolites could result in epigenetic alterations leading to the disease susceptibility. ...

Many aquatic plants act as biosorbents, removing and recovering metals from the environment. To assess the biosorbent activity of Egeria densa, a submerged freshwater macrophyte, plants were collected monthly from a circular drainage area in Lake Biwa basin and the Mn concentrations of the plants were analysed. Mn concentrations in these plants were generally above those of terrestrial hyperaccumulators, and were markedly higher in spring and summer than in autumn. Mn concentrations were much lower ...
