The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine changes in young mothers' depressive symptoms from pregnancy through the first two postpartum years and how supportive relationships with key individuals were related to mothers' depressive symptoms over time. Data were collected from young, low-income African American mothers (N = 248) during pregnancy and at 4, 12, and 24 months postpartum. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) analyses revealed that depressive symptoms were highest during pregnancy ...

Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) powder was treated with subcritical water at 150 and 200°C in a semi-continuous system at a constant flow rate (3 mL/min) and pressure (6 MPa). Major flavoring compounds, i.e., cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, cinnamyl alcohol and coumarin, were extracted at lower recoveries than the extraction using methanol, suggesting that degradation of these components might occur during the subcritical water treatment. Caffeic, ferulic, p-coumaric, protocatechuic and vanillic ...

Background: Topical tranexamic acid has been claimed to lighten melasma without serious adverse effects. However, controlled studies assessing the efficacy and safety of topical tranexamic acid (TA) for the treatment of melasma is limited. Objective: To assess in a double blind, randomized, prospective study, the efficacy of topical 5% tranexamic acid versus vehicle for treatment of melasma. Methods: Twenty-three women with bilateral epidermal melasma enrolled in a split-face trial lasting 12 weeks. ...

Abstract We describe three cases of exogenous ochronosis of the malar areas due to long-term application of skin-lightening agents for melasma, effectively treated by combination of Q-switched Nd:YAG and the fractional carbon dioxide lasers. None of these lasers has been reported to be used to effectively treat ochronosis before. The Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is capable of disintegrating dermal ochronotic fibers, thereby facilitating their phagocytosis and elimination via lymphatics. The fractional ...

Linear atrophoderma of Moulin (LAM) is a rare dermatosis in childhood and early adolescence. The exact etiology of LAM is still obscure. Several treatment modalities were reported but none was consistently successful. We report a case of LAM in which a favorable outcome was obtained with topical calcipotriol. The relevant literature is also reviewed.

Summary Intralesional injection with corticosteroid remains the mainstay of therapy for hypertrophic scars and keloids, however some lesions are unresponsive or may result in skin atrophy. Intralesional bleomycin injection is an alternative therapy that has been widely reported. In order to compare the effectiveness and safety of bleomycin for the treatment of keloids and hypertrophic scars in skin of color population, Fitzpatrick skin type III to V patients with keloids or hypertrophic scars were ...

Abstract Contour trees are extensively used in scalar field analysis. The contour tree is a data structure that tracks the evolution of level set topology in a scalar field. Scalar fields are typically available as samples at vertices of a mesh and are linearly interpolated within each cell of the mesh. A more suitable way of representing scalar fields, especially when a smoother function needs to be modeled, is via higher order interpolants. We propose an algorithm to compute the contour tree for ...

the bird came earlier until I realized that it now came before my own supper hour instead of after it., Only at mid-winter did I become aware of a behavioral pattern and begin a record of its movements. With the aid of an electric torch it was discovered that the bird did not fly over the house but went to roost up under the wide eaves on a cross beam and that it was a female Sparrow Hawk (F&o sparverius) on its postbreeding grounds. From then on, as nearly as my own schedule would permit, daily observations ...

An area of sympatry between bower-attending Great and Spotted Bowerbirds Chlamydera nuchalis and C. maculata (Ptilonorhynchidae) in northern Queensland is described. Great Bowerbirds maintained bowers within little more than a kilometre of riverine vegetation and Spotted Bowerbirds mostly beyond this and in more arid habitat. The two species meet where the two favoured habitats abut and thus do so linearly either side of the major river system of the study area. The two closest pairs of bowers of ...
