Indigo Esmonde,

When students learn mathematics in school, they learn more than just the procedures, algorithms, and concepts. They also learn about what counts as mathematics, who practices mathematics, how they do so, and for what ends. But school is not the only source for students' developing notions of what mathematics is and what it is for. Students also learn about mathematics from the societal curriculum: "that massive, ongoing, informal curriculum of families, peer groups, neighborhoods, churches, organizations, ...

Background: Despite an extensive literature-base documenting strong outcomes for undergraduates engaged in service learning, few studies have investigated whether, and to what degree, these outcomes extend beyond the semester(s) undergraduates are actually engaged in service learning. Purpose: This study addresses this gap by following up with undergraduates who participated in an innovative service-learning project as part of their teacher preparation program. Our goal was to investigate the impact ...

William Gasarch,

I once asked a lesbian friend of mine "what is your favorite TV show?" She said it is "The L word" (a lesbian-themed show on HBO). She admitted that it really wasn't that good, but it was about people like her, and it was one of the few such shows. I approach fiction (and even nonfiction) about mathematicians in the same light. I give it some credit just for relating to us.In this review I consider three such works and ask the following questions: (1) is it fun to read (or view) independent of the math? ( ...

In this year's first issue we brought you “Cardiac surgery in Germany during 2012” and promised the statistics for 2013 for the near future. Meanwhile providing an insight into the innards of this journal may help to keep you entertained. Some journals publish their annual numbers in regular original articles. I would like to start more modestly with an Editorial with the potential for further development if interest is generated.
