Disruptions remain one of the most hazardous events in the operation of a tokamak device, since they can cause damage to the vacuum vessel and surrounding structures. Their potential danger increases with the plasma volume and energy content and therefore they will constitute an even more serious issue for the next generation of machines. For these reasons, in the recent years a lot of attention has been devoted to devise predictors, capable of foreseeing the imminence of a disruption sufficiently ...

JANNuS (Joint Accelerators for Nano-Science and Nuclear Simulation) will be a unique user facility in Europe dedicated to material modification by ion beam implantation and irradiation. The main originality of the project is that it will be possible to perform implantation and irradiation with simultaneous multiple ions beams and in situ characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation or ion beam analysis. This facility will be composed of two experimental platforms located ...

We study, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the surface of KTaO${}_{3}$ (KTO), a wide-gap insulator with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We find that this 2DEG is a genuinely different physical state with respect to the bulk: the orbital symmetries of its subbands are entirely reconstructed and their masses are renormalized. This occurs because the values of the SOC, the Fermi energy, and the subband splittings become comparable in the 2DEG. ...

Abstract This work is concerned with the computation of incompressible axisymmetric and full three‐dimensional free‐surface flows. In particular, the circular‐hydraulic jump is simulated and compared with approximate analytic solutions. However, the principal thrust of this paper is to provide a real problem as a test bed for comparing the many existing convective approximations. Their performance is compared; SMART, HLPA and VONOS emerge as acceptable upwinding methods for this problem. Copyright © ...

Abstract This article takes as its starting point the derivation of the word ‘revolution’ from the Latin word revolvere, and its original sense of ‘to revolve, roll back’.This links, etymologically, the concept of overturning the status quo with the image of a wheel. From Boethius’ De consolatione philosophiae, written at the end of the Roman Empire, until the early modern period, Fortune’s Wheel was the ubiquitous image of the mutability of this sublunary world. A major theme in Boethius was the ...

Low-surface-tension metals were predicted to be insufficient to catalyze the growth of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) in vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mode while counter examples do exist, for example, in the tin- or indium-catalyzed SiNWs. This puzzle remains largely unresolved. We first examine the local tension-force-balance in a tin-catalyzed SiNW by using a cross-section analysis. We found that the existence of an ultrathin sidewall-spreading catalyst layer helps to stabilize the catalyst drop during growth. ...

Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) are becoming a popular choice to develop a new generation of radial junction solar cells. We here explore a bismuth- (Bi-) catalyzed growth and doping of SiNWs, via vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mode, to fabricate amorphous Si radial n–i–p junction solar cells in a one-pump-down and low-temperature process in a single chamber plasma deposition system. We provide the first evidence that catalyst doping in the SiNW cores, caused by incorporating Bi catalyst atoms as n-type dopant, ...

Si containing a band of nanocavities has been irradiated with Si+ ions at elevated temperatures to study interactions of irradiation-induced defects with open volume defects. For irradiation at 100 °C, nanocavities are shown to be preferential nucleation sites for amorphization. It is proposed that this behavior occurs to minimize the local free energy, whereby less dense amorphous Si is free to expand into the cavity open volume. Furthermore, for irradiation at 300 °C, cavities are very efficient ...

A new martensitic nitinol stent with improved flexibility and radiopacity was tested to evaluate whether these differences improve initial or long-term outcome. Patients who underwent percutaneous revascularization of a discrete native coronary lesion were randomly assigned to the new stent (PARAGON, n = 349) or to the first-generation Palmaz-Schatz (PS) stent (n = 339). The primary end point was target vessel failure at 6 months (a composite of cardiac or noncardiac death, any infarction in the distribution ...

Ion implantation of H or He into silicon, followed by annealing can create a band of nanocavities. Such nanocavities can exhibit a range of interesting and often non-equilibrium interactions with defects and metals during subsequent implantation and annealing. This paper gives an overview of such interactions, concentrating on cavities produced by H-implantation. The evolution of cavities during annealing is briefly treated, followed by illustrations of the very efficient gettering ability of cavities ...
