The purpose of this study was to assess the myceliation rate, mycelial vigor and "estimated biomass" of Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler, grown on a sugarcane bagasse substrate enriched with rice bran and sugarcane molasses for spawn production. The proportions of rice bran used were 0, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40% (dry weight/dry weight of bagasse) and the sugarcane molasses concentrations tested were 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 g/kg (dry weight/dry weight of bagasse plus rice bran). The myceliation ...

This investigation was performed to evaluate the biological efficiency (BE), mean mushroom weight (MMW), mean number of mushroom (MNM) and mushroom quality of Shiitake [ Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler] when grown on a sterilized substrate composed by sugarcane bagasse enriched with rice bran and sugarcane molasses. The proportions of rice bran were 0, 15, 20, 25 and 30% (dry weight/dry weight of bagasse); and the concentrations of sugarcane molasses were 0, 30 and 60 g/kg (dry weight/dry weight of bagasse ...

Background Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, can lead to scarring and deformities. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a lymphotropic virus with high rates of replication, leads to cell death in various stages of infection. These diseases have major social and quality of life costs, and although the relevance of their comorbidity is recognized, several aspects are still not fully understood. Methodology/Principal Findings Two cohorts of patients with leprosy in an endemic region of the Amazon ...

Cardiac complications constitute a rare clinical manifestation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. This virus is usually asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals. We report a case of myocarditis and cardiac insufficiency due to primary CMV infection. Serological tests by using ELISA method showed positive results for the virus. A 41-year-old man with no prior comorbidities presenting with dyspnoea, fever, and oedema was admitted to the cardiac emergency service. He had fever and dry cough, which ...

Background The geographical overlap of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and leprosy infection has become increasingly frequent and worrying, bringing many clinical issues. Peripheral neuropathy is very frequent in leprosy because of the predilection of its etiologic agent by Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system, and it also affects individuals with HIV as one of the most common neurological manifestations. Methodology/Principal findings The present study compared a cohort of 63 patients ...

We describe the vocal repertoire of the Yellow-faced Parrot (Alipiopsitta xanthops) from recorded vocalizations and also flock sizes in Brasília (Brazil) during 2006. Vocal communication signals are both long-range and short-range sounds. We describe seven call types: flight call (long-range), long-range alarm call, congregation call (long-range), two agonistic calls (long-range/short-range), sentinel call (short-range), and a short-range alarm call. The flight call is equivalent to the functional song ...

ABSTRACT Aim To test the Eltonian noise hypothesis ( ENH ), that biotic interactions do not affect species distributions at large geographical scales. Location The Brazilian cerrado, a central South American savanna and biodiversity hotspot. Methods We modelled the distributions of 11 species of cerrado parrots using the software Maxent at four different spatial resolutions. We built models using abiotic variables, biotic variables (distribution of diet resources) and models combining abiotic and biotic ...

This study is based on observations of behaviour of the bird species which visit andfeed on 2 species ofCecropia catkins in three localities of the Atlantic forest, SP.A total of31 species was observed visiting Cecropia; out of these, 17 were seen feeding on the catkins. Two species of the family Psittacidae were observed as seed predators.Seed germination tests of the seeds obtained from the birds' feces eating C. adenopus catkins proved that they function as dispersai agents. Avian frugivory in Cytharexyllum Myrianthum Cham (Verbenaceae) in pastures near Campinas, Sao Paulo. Isolated trees in pastures are now often, due to increasing devastation of forested areas, important feeding places for migratory or generalist birds. These trees serve both as food sources and as deposition sites for seeds from fruits consumed in neighboring areas. The objective of this study was to identify the avian consumers of the fruits of Cytharexyllum myrianthum trees in open pastures and ...

Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are biopolymers formed by amino acid sequences derived from tropoelastin. These biomolecules can be soluble below critical temperatures, forming aggregates at higher temperatures, which makes them an interesting source for the design of different nanobiomaterials. These nanobiomaterials can be obtained from heterologous expression in several organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and plants. Thanks to the many advantages of ELPs, they have been used in the biomedical ...

The samples were analyzed by sequencing of the Nested-PCR products. The A1 and A2 subgenotypes were detected in human and dogs. ABSTRACT Cyclotides are a family of head‐to‐tail cyclized peptides containing three conserved disulfide bonds, in a structural scaffold also known as a cyclic cysteine knot. Due to the high degree of cysteine conservation, novel members from this peptide family can be identified in protein databases through a search through regular expression (REGEX). In this work, six novel cyclotide‐like precursors from the Poaceae were identified from NCBI's non‐redundant protein database by the use of REGEX. ...

Supernumerary (B) chromosomes are dispensable genomic elements occurring frequently among grasshoppers. Most B chromosomes are enriched with repetitive DNAs, including satellite DNAs (satDNAs) that could be implicated in their evolution. Although studied in some species, the specific ancestry of B chromosomes is difficult to ascertain and it was determined in only a few examples. Here we used bioinformatics and cytogenetics to characterize the composition and putative ancestry of B chromosomes in ...

The Amazon rainforest has undergone some changes in its vegetation cover due to the anthropic action driven mainly by the construction of a hydroelectric plant in the Legal Amazon. Those changes have impact on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index - NDVI, surface temperature, albedo and, consequently, in the net radiation. Thus, the main aim of this paper was to evaluate the modification of the biophysics parameters (albedo, NDVI, surface temperature and net radiation) at the surface due to the ...

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of thermal and mechanical shocks on the productivity of Lentinula edodes colonized on 140 Eucalyptus saligna logs at different immersion times in water and in the first flush of production. The logs were immersed in water at low temperature (16ºC) or environmental temperature (22ºC), for 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26 and 38 hours. The mechanical shock treatment was accomplished by dropping the logs onto the floor three consecutive times, in a vertical position. ...
