A human cDNA encoding a novel zinc-finger protein, ZNF274, was identified by the “nuclear transportation trap” method (Ueki, N., Oda, T., Kondo, M., Yano, K., Noguchi, T., and Muramatsu, M., 1998, Nat. Biotechnol. 16: 1338–1342). Based on sequence analysis of the full-length cDNA, this novel gene has two alternative splicing forms, ZNF274a and ZNF274b, which encode putative proteins of 621 and 584 amino acids, respectively. ZNF274a contains five C2H2-type zinc-finger motifs, two KRAB-A (Kruppel-associated ...

Abstract CD44 serves as a marker of cancer stem cells. Alternative splicing generates the CD44v9 isoform. Cancer stem cells are associated with the epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in cancers, although little is known about their role in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Here, we aimed to clarify the relationship between CD44v9 expression, the epithelial‐mesenchymal transition, and clinicopathological features of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. CD44v9 levels were higher at the ...

This study reports cDNA isolation and partial characterization of a novel human nucleolar protein isolated by "nuclear transportation trap" described previously. The cDNA encodes a putative polypeptide of 524 amino acids with a shortEscherichia coliDNA helicase homologous region, an acid-rich domain, three potential base-rich nuclear localization signals (NLSs), a serine-rich domain, and a deduced coiled-coil domain. The protein has no known prominent similarities with any other protein in the protein ...

Mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma (MANEC) is defined as a neoplasm composed of both exocrine and endocrine carcinomas, each comprising at least 30% of the tumor. MANEC can occur in various organs of the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and colon. We herein provide the first case report of surgically resected MANEC arising in Barrett's esophagus (BE). A 70-year-old man presenting with abdominal pain was referred to our hospital. Upper endoscopy showed a type 0-IIa + IIc elevated ...

The aim of this study was to compare pathological features among in-stent restenosis lesions after drug-eluting stent (DES) placement, those after bare metal stent (BMS) placement, and de-novo atherosclerotic lesions.Restenosis after stenting is an over-reaction of the wound-healing response after vascular injury, which is characterized by a sequence of inflammation, granulation, extracellular matrix remodeling, and smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration. Recent advances in DES technology ...

Both internal and external oxidative stresses act on DNA and can induce carcinogenesis. 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is an indicator of oxidative stress and it leads to transversion mutations and carcinogenesis. 8-OHdG is excision-repaired by 8-OHdG DNA glycosylase (OGG1). The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of oxidative DNA damage and repair enzymes on esophageal carcinogenesis. The levels of 8-OHdG and OGG1 were immunohistochemically evaluated in resected specimens, including ...

Primary amelanotic malignant melanoma of esophagus, which is a subtype of primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus (PMME), is a very rare disease with a poor prognosis. We herein report a case of the amelanotic type of PMME.An 86-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with symptoms of dysphagia. An endoscopic examination and constructed radiography revealed an elevated and semipedunculated lesion with an ulcer in the lower thoracic esophagus accompanied by another submucosal lesion of the ...

A 70-year-old man developed diffuse restenosis in the right coronary artery, in which a bare metal stent (BMS) and two sirolimus-eluting stents (SES) were deployed sequentially. He underwent directional coronary atherectomy (DCA) for in-stent restenosis (ISR) lesions 13 months after both BMS and SES stenting. Further 4 months later, that is, 17 months after stent implantation, however, ISR recurred just at the SES site alone. Then we performed second DCA for the ISR lesion at SES site. The tissue materials ...

During a two-year period from January 1986 to December 1987, 54 patients underwent lumbar discectomy for herniated nucleus pulposus. Five patients (9.8%) were diagnosed as having an extraforaminal disc herniation.‹Materials› There were 3 male patients and 2 female patients. The age was 20-53 years old, the average being 36 years old. The site of nucleus pulposus were 4 cases at the L5-S1 intervertebral disc and one case at the L4-L5 intervertebral disc.‹Diagnosis› Clinically, the involved nerve root ...

Mechanical properties of semi-crystalline polymers and composites with a semi-crystalline thermoplastic matrix are highly dependent on the crystallinity and crystalline morphology. The cooling rate from the melt has the greatest effect on this along with other processing conditions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of the cooling rate on the mode I and II fracture toughnesses of the composites with the semi-crystalline thermoplastic matrix. Carbon fiber/polyphenylene sulfide ( ...

As a result of a radiological prospective study carried out in 121 cases in 19 years on the average, degenerative spondylolisthesis was found in 22 cases. The type of the zygapophysial joint in a group of the spondylolisthesis in 22 cases was M type or W type, but was not X type.In a group of the spondylolisthesis in 22 cases, the pedicle-facet angle and the zygapophysal joint angle had enlarged before spondylolisthesis. We think that the cause of spondylolisthesis was associated with the type of ...

Left ventricular (LV) myxomas are rare. We present a case of a LV myxoma arising from the interventricular septum of the LV outflow tract in a 76-year-old woman. General examination of the patient did not reveal any abnormality except for a grade 3/6 systolic murmur in the left parasternal area. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a round pedunculated mass (size, 23 mm × 11 mm × 10 mm) at the interventricular septum with a broad pedicle. The mass was successfully removed and was pathologically confirmed ...

Relatively few literatures have been reported about OPLL of the lumber spine compared with those of the cevical spine because of the comparatively low incidence of clinical symptoms of the lumber OPLL. 50 patients with OPLL of the lumber spine were studied roentgenographically, who had low back pain, lower limb pain, sensory disturbance and intermittent claudication. The type of ossification was classified into two types: 44 localized type and 6 continuous one. Furthermore they were divided into ...

To understand the mechanial charasteristics of vertebral body structures, especially the effect of posterior elements, a stress analysis of the lumnbar spine was performed using the three dimensional finite element method. The FEM model contained two adjacent vertebre and the intervertebral disc, the structures of which were cortical bones, cancellous bones, annulus fibrosis, nucleus pulposus and ligament. We made three models which had different facetal angles. Compulsory displacement was applied ...

Fifteen operative cases of degenerative spondylolisthesis were examined in our department. There were 4 male and 11 female patients whose ages ranged from 33 to 75 years (average, 51 years). The involved levels of the lumbar spine were as follows; L3:1, L4:12, L5:1, and both L4 and L5:1.In each case, clinical symptoms, X-ray findings, operative findings, etc. were reviewed. Clinical symptoms were evaluated by JOA score system. Subjective symptoms were scored 3.8 points per 9 on the average, always ...

Straight leg raising was restricted in 5 patients, sensory deficit were increased in 12 patients and 9 patients became worser in weakness of lower limbs. These alternations tended to be provoked in agreement with lesions, so excercise test appeared to ...
