Nagado-daiko, the most common type of traditional Japanese drum, is known for its unique diaphragm, which is stretched to a relatively high tension compared to other types of drums. The diaphragm is primarily made of cow skin. Once the cow skin is chemically treated, it exhibits Young's modulus of approximately 3.5×109 Pa, suggesting that the diaphragm should be treated as a stretched plate, or a stiff membrane. This paper reviews the method for obtaining eigenvalues and eigen-frequencies of a membrane ...

BackgroundIn 1974, the Acoustical Society of Japan first organizes a research committee to develop a road traffic noise prediction model. This committee has been undertaking research activities since then.As a result of its activities, a prediction model called ASJ Model 1975 was published in 1975, which provided a method of calculating the 50 percentile A-weighted sound pressure level (L A50 ) [1,2].This model was widely accepted and applied to assessments of noise around roads for many years. After ...

The governing equations are presented and particular issues such as the formulation of impedance and far field boundary conditions, the treament of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, resolution requirements and methods for controlling dispersion error, are discussed. An ultrasonic motor using two bolt-clamped Langevin-type transducers was described. A rigorous optimization of the motor's structure was conducted and its results are reported in regard to various motor parameters. Based on FEM analysis and experimental results it was established that symmetric and anti-symmetric resonance frequencies could be matched by adjusting the mass of the tip of the motor's head block. The driving voltage of the motor was reduced by using stacked multi-layered piezo-elements. ...

Muscle activations during speech production are important for understanding speech motor control. In this paper, we put forward a physiological articulatory model-based approach to estimate muscle activations in producing five sustained Japanese vowels by minimizing the morphological difference between model simulations and target MRI observations, where the model is an improved version of Dang's partial 3D model. The initial muscle activations in the model simulation are set according to observation ...

Voice activity detection (VAD) plays an important role in speech processing including speech recognition, speech enhancement, and speech coding under noisy environments. We have developed an evaluation framework for VAD under noisy environments, named CENSREC-1-C. We designed this framework for simple isolated utterance detection and hence, this framework consists of noisy continuous digit utterances and evaluation tools for VAD results. We define two evaluation measures, one for frame-level detection ...

Herein the possibility of the FDTD method, which considers longitudinal and shear waves and two types of damping terms, is investigated as a new prediction method for architectural structure-borne sound. Equations of motion and Hooke's laws of three-dimensional elastic bodies are directly discretized with a difference scheme of the leap-flog algorithm. Using these formulations, vibration-mode transformations at the junctions of building frames can be considered without special handling. This method ...

Comparative study of longitudinal wave propagation in cancellous bone was performed. We simulated wave propagation with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method using a three-dimensional X-ray computer tomography (CT) model of an actual cancellous bone. We also experimentally measured the waves that propagated in an identical specimen under similar conditions. The speeds of fast waves and the amplitudes of fast and slow waves at small ROIs (region of interest) in the specimen were examined. ...

Distance measurement using an ultrasonic wave is suitable for environment recognition in autonomous mobile robots. Ultrasonic distance measurement with the pulse-echo method is based on the determination of the reflected echo's time of flight (TOF). Pulse compression can improve distance resolution and the reflected echo's signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, calculation of cross correlation requires high-cost digital signal processing. A sensor signal processing method of cross correlation using ...

The ATR MRI database of Japanese vowel production was used to evaluate the acoustic characteristics of the vocal tract for the five Japanese vowels through the measurements of frequency responses from solid vocal-tract models formed by a stereolithographic technique. The database includes speech sounds as well as volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, but the speech sounds were recorded separately from the acquisition MRI data; therefore, their speech spectra are not appropriate for use ...

Unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites for the soundboard of musical instruments were made using glass fiber or carbon fiber and light-weighted hard polyurethane foam. The vibrational properties and frequency response characteristic of the composites were investigated by changing fibers, volume fraction of fibers and fiber distribution, and the results obtained were compared with those of Sitka spruce for soundboard. The composites, which had 5 to 6 volume percent of carbon fiber filaments ...

This paper describes a method to estimate the position of a crack in a concrete block using several vibration pick-ups. An array of vibration pick-ups is attached on the concrete block, and a vibration pulse is forced by using a small hammer. If there is a crack, a reflection wave is generated from the position of the crack. Therefore, conventional methods to estimate the position of vibration source seems to be useful for this purpose. However, since the concrete block is elastic, there are three ...

As a basic study on room acoustic design, sound propagation in rooms, scattering effect of acoustic diffusers and reflection characteristics of suspended panel arrays are investigated. Through the investigation, it has been confirmed that this kind of visualization technique is very effective ...

Generally, people tend to think that absolute pitch possessors or musical experts are superior in all of their auditory and musical abilities. However, not much data has been shown to prove whether any differences exist in the basic hearing abilities of absolute pitch possessors or musical experts for general sounds outside the context of music. In this study, we conducted four experiments to investigate if absolute pitch possessors or music experts are superior in their basic hearing abilities ...

Our ability to discriminate sounds such as vowels is not uniform throughout acoustic space. That is, our auditory perceptual spaces are warped representations of acoustic space. One example of auditory space warping, the perceptual magnet effect, arises from exposure to the phonemes of an infant's native language. We have developed a neural model that accounts for this effect. The model is based on the idea that category learning during infancy changes the distribution of the firing preferences ...

The vibration of the vocal folds produces the primary sound source for vowels. This paper first reviews vocal fold anatomy and the kinematics associated with typical vibratory motion. A brief historical background is then presented on the basic physics of vocal fold vibration and various efforts directed at mathematical modeling of the vocal folds. Finally, a low-dimensional model is used to simulate the vocal fold vibration under various conditions of vocal tract loading. In particular, a "no-tract" ...

Recent developments in observation techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging allow us to obtain an accurate description of the vocal-tract shape. It is thus possible to perform analyses of the acoustic characteristics of three-dimensional vocal-tracts at higher frequencies where the assumption of plane wave propagation does not hold. Historical and conventional one-dimensional models of vocal-tracts are briefly described followed by recent knowledge of the acoustic characteristics of three-dimensional ...

In order to simulate three-dimensional sound fields in laboratory experiments, a 6-channel recording/reproduction system has been contrived. To record the sound in a real sound field, six uni-directional microphones combined at every 90 degrees are used. As the reproduction system, six loudspeakers are set in an anechoic room and the recorded signals in each direction are reproduced. The advantages of this system are that the principle is quite simple and the listening area is not strictly limited. ...

The feasibility of using the formant analysis-synthesis approach to replace the voicing sources of esophageal speech was explored. Using inverse-filtered signals extracted from normal speakers provided the voicing sources. Pitch extraction was tested with various pitch extraction methods, and then a computationally simple, band-limited auto-correlation method was chosen. To accomplish stable and practical speech enhancement, the input signal was divided into low- and high-frequency channels, then ...

Although there are several factors causing "cocktail party effect" after more than half a century of research, the major one is considered to be the spatial separation of the target signal and the interferer. This paper will overview developments of the improvement of performance resulting from the directional separation of the target signal from interferers when listening in a field or through headphones. The basic assumption concerning the cocktail party effect is that there are one or more interfering ...
