Nuclear magnetic resonance absorption in oriented polytetrafluoroethylene fibers has been investigated in the temperature range 170°–380°K. The sample, in the form of a parallel bundle of fibers, showed a marked dependence of line shape on the direction of the applied magnetic field over the temperature range studied, although the observed anisotropy was much greater above 285°K than below. Changes occurring in the linewidth and second moment at around 285°K indicate a rotational disorder transition ...

In addition to its important role in intracellular metabolic pathways, ATP appears to function as a neurotransmitter in mammalian neurones. The extracellular effects of ATP are not restricted to neurones. We describe the effects of ATP on transmembrane fluxes of monovalent and divalent cations and on phagocytosis in the J774 mouse macrophage cell line and in mouse macrophages elicited by intraperitoneal injection of thioglycollate broth. Of all nucleotides tested, only ATP is capable of depolarizing ...

Variation of germanium lone pair center (GLPC) concentration in germanosilicate multistep-index optical fibers and preforms was studied using confocal microscopy luminescence technique. The experimental results provide evidence that in the central core region ([Ge] approximately 11 wt.%) of our specific canonical samples the ratio [GLPC]/[Ge] is five times larger in fiber than in preforms. The relative influence of the glass composition and of the drawing process on the generation efficiency of the ...

We report an experimental study on phosphorus-related point defects in amorphous silica, based on photoluminescence, absorption, and electron spin resonance measurements carried out on P-doped ${\text{SiO}}_{2}$ fiber preforms. By photoluminescence measurements excited by laser or synchrotron light we detect an emission band peaked at 3.0 eV with a lifetime in the range of ms. The excitation spectrum of the 3.0 eV emission consists of two transitions peaked at 4.8 and 6.4 eV, the former giving rise ...

We investigated the effects of 10-keV X-ray radiation on the transmission properties of F-doped optical fibers in the 200–850 nm range of wavelengths (1.5–6 eV). We also studied the influence of pre-loading this kind of fibers with hydrogen on its radiation sensitivity. Our results showed that, for our experimental conditions (pre-treatment with H2 several months before irradiation with diffusion of all the H2 out the fiber core and cladding before X-ray exposure), this pre-treatment increases the ...

Prototype samples of preforms and associated fibers have been designed and fabricated through MCVD process to investigate the role of fluorine (F) and germanium (Ge) doping elements on the radiation sensitivity of silica-based glasses. We characterized the behaviors of these canonical samples before, during and after 10 keV X-ray irradiation through several spectroscopic techniques, to obtain global information (in situ absorption measurements, electron paramagnetic resonance) or spatially-resolved ...

The role of fluorine doping in the response to UV pulsed laser and γ radiation of silica preforms and fibers was studied using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Exposure to radiation mainly generates E′ centers, with the same effectiveness in fibers and in preforms. The E′ concentration in F-doped silica fibers is found to increase with UV energy fluence till a saturation value, consistently with a precursor conversion process. These results show the fluorine role in reducing the strained ...

Experimental characterization through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and confocal luminescence microscopy (CML) of a Ge-doped glass (preform and fiber) reveals the generation of several point defects by 10 keV X-ray radiation-induced attenuation: GeE', Ge(1), Ge(2), and Ge-ODC. The generation mechanisms of Ge-ODC and charged defects like GeE' centers are studied through ab initio simulation. Our calculations used a 108 atom supercell with a glass composition comparable to the Ge-doped core or ...

In this paper, we study the radiation-induced point defects related to the phosphorus element that is commonly used to improve the optical properties of silica-based glasses but is responsible of a dramatic increase in their radiation sensitivity. To this aim, the influence of x-ray irradiation on prototype phosphorus-doped canonical fibers and their related preforms was investigated by in situ radiation induced attenuation (RIA), optical absorption, and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. ...

BackgroundGiven the observed association between smoking, inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) one may predict that smoking cessation may improve AHR. However, only a few studies have investigated the effect of smoking on AHR and their results appear to be conflicting depending on the stimulus used in their bronchoprovocation protocol. The aim of the current study was to compare changes in AHR between direct (methacholine (Mch)) and indirect (adenosine 5′monophosphate (AMP)) stimuli before ...

Children with some chronic health conditions experience family functioning difficulties. However, research examining family functioning in youth with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) has produced mixed results. Therefore, the current review critically synthesized the literature on family functioning among youth with FGIDs.A systematic search using pediatric, family functioning, and FGID search terms was conducted in PubMed, PsycInfo, and ProQuest. Out of the 586 articles initially identified, ...
