We conducted a review of historic demersal fish biomass estimates (1970–2001) in the upwelling area off northern Colombia. A clear pattern of decline in demersal fish biomass has been identified. Total demersals and most selected species groups showed a negative trend in mean biomass. Partial recovery in biomass by year 2001 as compared to 1970 was detected, concomitantly with reductions in fishing effort by the shrimp trawling fleet. Triggerfishes and puffers showed an increasing trend in biomass ...

On the basis of an Ecopath model and Ecosim model simulations, the trophic role of small pelagic fish in the Gulf of Salamanca, a tropical upwelling ecosystem on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, was explored using a combination of fishing vulnerabilities and harvest scenarios. Dynamic simulated changes in the biomass of small pelagic fish caused reallocation of the biomass of higher trophic-level organisms but not of lower trophic-level organisms (plankton). This was attributed to bottom-up control ...

Growth parameters (K, L∞) and mortality rates (M, Z) were estimated for 20 fish populations (L∞ was estimated for six further species) of the Caribbean Sea. Samples were collected during 15 scientific cruises carried out between December 1995 and March 1998 in the Gulf of Salamanca, Colombia. Observed length frequency data were fitted to both standard and modified von Bertalanffy growth models to consider seasonal growth. For those species for which growth parameter sets were available in FishBase ( ...

Abstract. Hake (Merluccius gayi peruanus) predation plays an important role in the dynamics of the Humboldt Current ecosystem (HCE). Changes in the hake trophic habits associated with physical variability are expected to impact prey populations and to propagate through the food web. Time series (1995–2002) of (a) stomach contents of hake, (b) biomass estimations of fish prey species of hake, and (c) depth of the 15°C isotherm was analysed with the aim of exploring the impacts of El Niño 1997–1998 on the ...

Hydrographic and underway water velocity profiles were measured at the entrance to Concepción Bay, an equatorward facing embayment in central Chile, in order to illustrate the wind-induced exchange flow. Observations took place over a 25-h period (5–6 January 2002) during the austral summer, which is characterized by upwelling winds in the region. One portion of the observational transect was directly influenced by the wind and the other was protected from such influence by an island. The portion ...

Effects of the fisheye bycatch reduction device (BRD) and turtle excluder device (TED) on shrimp retention and bycatch reduction were assessed, aiming to increase sustainability and attenuate the ecological impact of shrimp trawls in the Colombian Caribbean Sea. A total of 88 hauls were carried out in two different periods. The four shrimp trawl nets of the fishing vessel were each equipped with a different device configuration: BRD, TED, TED/BRD, and control (without devices). The highest reduction ...

This paper deals with the experimental and theoretical evaluation of punching shear capacity of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) slab–column connections. Five experimental specimens with a thickness of 160 mm, different fiber volume contents (0, 1.0, and 1.5%) and different flexural reinforcement ratios (0.75 and 1.5%) have been tested. The experimental results were evaluated using a physical–mechanical model based on the critical shear crack theory (CSCT). The model has given a good approximation ...

Monitoring the industrial production of galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) requires a fast and accurate methodology able to quantify, in real time, the substrate level and the product yield. In this work, a simple, fast and inexpensive UV spectrophotometric method, together with partial least squares regression (PLS) and artificial neural networks (ANN), was applied to simultaneously estimate the products (GOS) and the substrate (lactose) concentrations in fermentation samples. The selected multiple models ...

The highest rates of incidental catch of non-target species is associated with shrimp bottom trawl fisheries. This could lead to adverse effects on the structure and functioning of ecosystems. However, the structural and functional variability of fish communities captured as by-catch from this fishery in the Colombian Caribbean Sea have been poorly documented. We examined commercial fishing hauls in two areas (Gulf of Morrosquillo and adjacent coralline islands) during the rainy and dry seasons. ...

The dependence of the Landau gauge two-point gluon and ghost correlation functions on the lattice spacing and on the physical volume are investigated for pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions using lattice simulations. We present data from very large lattices up to ${128}^{4}$ and for two lattice spacings 0.10 fm and 0.06 fm corresponding to volumes of $\ensuremath{\sim}(13\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}{)}^{4}$ and $\ensuremath{\sim}(8\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}{)}^{4}$, respectively. The three gluon one particle irreducible function is investigated using lattice QCD simulations over a large region of momentum in the Landau gauge for four-dimensional pure Yang-Mills equations and the SU(3) gauge group. The results favor a zero crossing of the gluon form factor for momenta in the range 220--260 MeV. This zero crossing is required to happen in order to have a properly defined set of Dyson-Schwinger equations. It is also shown that in the high momentum region the lattice results ...

The quenched gluon and ghost propagator data published in [1] is reanalysed following the suggestion of [2] to resolve the differences between the infrared data of the simulations. Our results confirms that the procedure works well either for the gluon or for the ghost propagator but not for both propagators simultaneously as the observed deviations in the data follow opposite patterns. Definitive conclusions require improving the determination of the (ratios) of lattice spacings. A simple procedure ...

Tuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease that causes millions of deaths worldwide. Current treatment recommended by WHO is effective, however it is an extensive and arduous process associated to severe adverse effects, which induces a low patient compliance and the emerging of multidrug resistant tuberculosis. Thus, as a main goal of this study, rifampicin nanoparticles were surface functionalized with a tuftsin-modifed peptide to selectively recognize receptors located on infected alveolar ...

A discrete statistical model is a subset of a probability simplex. Its maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is a retraction from that simplex onto the model. We characterize all models for which this retraction is a rational function. This is a contribution via real algebraic geometry which rests on results on Horn uniformization due to Huh and Kapranov. We present an algorithm for constructing models with rational MLE, and we demonstrate it on a range of instances. Our focus lies on models familiar ...

Primary malignant breast lymphoma (PBL) is a rare disease with an incidence of 0.04-0.5% of all malignant breast neoplasms. The majority of cases are B-cell lymphomas and the most common histologic type is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLCL). In this study, we report our experience with three cases of PBL. The treatment was the same currently indicated for early stage aggressive NHL, i.e. anthracycline based chemotherapy followed by the involved field radiation therapy. Unfortunately, two patients ...
