Abstract. We present here a description of the spermatozoon of Rhopalura littoralis , the first fine‐structural study of an orthonectid sperm. The spermatozoon contains a slightly elongate nucleus and two centrioles orientated along the longitudinal axis of the sperm. The proximal centriole bears one rootlet. A single mitochondrion is present in the mid‐piece region. An acrosome is absent. The sperm tail is a simple flagellum with 9+2 structure. We consider the orthonectan spermatozoon to be closer ...

Abstract The fine structure of the mature plasmodia of Intoshia variabili , found in the kalyptorhynch flatworm Macrorhynchus crocea , was studied with transmission electron microscopy. As the Plasmodium matures it forms long finger‐like extensions inside the host. These extensions eventually take the place of the genital system of the host turbellarian. The mature Plasmodium is separated from the host tissues by a continuous membrane. The entire Plasmodium is surrounded by modified host cells, which ...

Abstract Adult orthonectids develop from germinal cells within a cytoplasmic matrix called a plasmodium. This is generally assumed to be formed by the parasite. In the case of Rhopalura ophiocomae , which lives in the brittle star Amphipholis squamata , the plasmodia occupying the perivisceral coelom are closely associated with the walls of the genital bursae or the gut, and they are covered by peritoneum. They have been reported to contain scattered small nuclei distinct from those within germinal ...

Abstract The morphology and fine structure of female Intoshia variabili , new combination for Rhopalura variabili Alexandrov & Sljusarev, 1992, were studied with transmission electron microscopy. The body surface is covered with a 3‐layered cuticula, under which is a layer of ciliated + non‐ciliated cells arranged in alternating rings around the body. Ciliated cells have lateral extensions that intercalate with the non‐ciliated cells. The kinetosome of each cilium has two longitudinally oriented cross‐ ...

Abstract Orthonectids are enigmatic parasitic bilaterians whose exact position on the phylogenetic tree is still uncertain. Despite ongoing debate about their phylogenetic position, the parasitic stage of orthonectids known as “plasmodium” remains underexplored. There is still no consensus on the origin of the plasmodium: whether it is an altered host cell or a parasitic organism that develops in the host extracellular environment. To determine the origin of the orthonectid parasitic stage, we studied ...
