SummarySummaryThe logrunners Orthonyx are a distinctive endemic Australo-Papuan group represented by two living species from eastern Australia and highland New Guinea, and two fossil species known from Quaternary deposits of southern Australia. The peculiar feeding method of logrunners gives their femora a distinctive appearance that is diagnostic for the genus. New material from Riversleigh, northwestern Queensland, extends the chronological range into the Miocene and increases the known geographical ...

This sixth part of "Type Specimens of Birds in the American Museum of Natural History" corresponds to taxa covered in Volume 10 of Peters' Check-list of Birds of the World. The original description of each taxon has been consulted unless otherwise noted, coordinates given for type localities when possible, currently accepted names for the taxa included, and comments on taxonomic history provided. Three hundred sixty-four published names are treated. Types of six of these are not in AMNH, and one ...

SummaryFifty-two nests of the Chowchilla Orthonyx spaldingii were examined on the Paluma Range and Atherton Tableland, north Queensland. Nests took from two weeks to several months to be completed. A single egg was laid in a dome-shaped, bulky, stick nest built on the ground (44%) or on sites < 3.3 m above ground. Nesting occurred throughout the year, with peak activity during July-December producing most fledglings (84%) during September-February. Fresh egg weight represented 10.6% of adult female ...

Abstract We isolated and characterized 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci in the logrunner ( Orthonyx temminckii ), a rainforest‐dwelling Australian bird. The number of alleles per locus observed within two populations ranged from three to 39, with observed heterozygosities of between 0.12 and 1.00. We demonstrate that these markers are useful for both population‐ and individual‐level analyses.
