Cephalopods are a group of marine invertebrates that have received little attention as sentinel species in comparison to other molluscs, such as bivalves. Consequently, their physiological and biochemical xenobiotic metabolism responses are poorly understood. Here we undertake a comparative analysis of the enzymatic activities involved in detoxification reactions and neural transmission in the digestive tract of two commercial cephalopods: the Common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, and the European cuttlefish, ...

In this paper, we are interested in providing lower estimations for the maximum number of limit cycles H(n) that planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by the curve y=xn can have, where n is a positive integer. For this, we perform a higher order Melnikov analysis for piecewise linear perturbations of the linear center. In particular, we obtain that H(2)≥4, H(3)≥8, H(n)≥7, for n≥4 even, and H(n)≥9, for n≥5 odd. This improves all the previous results for n≥2. Our analysis ...

Heavy metal contamination in water resources, soil, and food sources is an issue that compromises food safety in Sibaté, Colombia. In the present study concentration of heavy metals [HMs], such as Cu, As, Pb, Cr, Zn, Co, Cd and Ni, present in vegetables included in the typical Colombian diet were measured. The study was conducted as follows: samples of parsley, artichoke and carrots produced in a location near the Muña dam were collected, where the Bogotá River water is treated for use as a water ...

There is an increasing demand for alternative and sustainable protein sources, such as vegetables, insects and microorganisms, that can meet the nutritional and sensory pleasantness needs of consumers. This emergent interest for novel protein sources, allied with “green” and cost-effective processing technologies, such as high hydrostatic pressure, ohmic heating and pulsed electric fields, can be used as strategies to improve the consumption of proteins from sustainable sources without compromising ...

We study features of the thermoelectric transport through a Kitaev chain hosting Majorana bound states (MBS) at its ends. We describe the behavior of the Seebeck coefficient and the ZT figure of merit for two different configurations between MBS and normal current leads. We find an important violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in one of these geometries, leading to sizeable values of the thermoelectric efficiency over a narrow window in chemical potential away from neutrality. These findings could ...

Inguinal lymphadenectomy is the treatment of choice for patients with penile cancer and inguinal lymph node metastases. We describe the performance of the robotic bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy technique without repositioning the robot in a patient with penile carcinoma and high risk for nodal metastases and no palpable lymph nodes.A 64-year-old male patient was diagnosed with penile cancer (TNM: T3 N 0 M 0) and underwent a total penectomy with perineal urethrostomy. Abstract The most critical phase in plant life is seed germination, which is influenced by environmental factors. Drought and salinity are key environmental factors that affect seed germination. Reduction or alterations of germination when seeds are exposed to these factors have been shown to be due to either the adverse effects of water limitation and/or specific ion toxicity on metabolism. Phytohormones are chemical messengers produced within the plant that control its growth and development in ...

Voltage-gated calcium (CaV) channels are transmembrane proteins that form Ca2+-selective pores gated by depolarization and are essential regulators of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration. By providing a pathway for rapid Ca2+ influx, CaV channels couple membrane depolarization to a wide array of cellular responses including neurotransmission, muscle contraction and gene expression. CaV channels fall into two major classes, low voltage-activated (LVA) and high voltage-activated (HVA). The ion-conducting ...

Abstract Glial and glia‐derived cells express a variety of receptors for neurotransmitters and hormones, the majority of which evoke both Ca 2+ release from intracellular stores and Ca 2+ entry across the plasma membrane. We investigated the links between histamine H 1 receptor activation, Ca 2+ release from intracellular stores and Ca 2+ influx in human astrocytoma U373 MG cells. Histamine, through a H 1 receptor‐mediated effect, evoked an increase in cytoplasmic free calcium concentration ([Ca 2+ ] ...

Using a cDNA library made from Lonomia obliqua caterpillar bristles, we identified a transcript with a 603 bp open reading frame. The deduced protein corresponds to Lopap, a prothrombin activator previously isolated by our group from the bristles of this species. The mature protein is composed by 185 amino acids and shares similarity with members of the lipocalin family. The cDNA encoding the mature form was amplified by PCR, subcloned into pAE vector and used to transform Escherichia coli BL21( ...

Due to the the lack of information about parameters in the datasheets of photovoltaic (PV) panels, it is difficult to study their modeling because PV behavior is based on voltage–current (V-I) data, which present a highly nonlinear relationship. To solve this difficulty, this study presents a mathematical three-diode model of a PV panel that includes multiple unknown parameters: photoinduced current, saturation currents of the three diodes, three ideality factors, serial resistance, and parallel resistance. ...
