Abstract We address a novel time-variant forward-backward (FB) unbiased finite impulse response (UFIR) smoothing algorithm designed to denoise piecewise-smooth signals with known or well detectable edge positions. Owing to the variable averaging interval, the algorithm unites advantages of linear structures with robustness of nonlinear ones. The FB UFIR smoother has been examined in Gaussian and heavy-tailed noise environments and compared to the nonlinear myriad filter derived under the Cauchy statistics. ...

Despite significant advances in cleft lip and palate treatment, anatomical controversies remain. Some have proposed that the width of the cleft is due to alveolar segmental displacement. Others suggest that the width is due to palatoalveolar hypoplasia. Improving our understanding of cleft anatomy may have implications for presurgical orthopedics and tissue engineering therapies. Palatoalveolar impressions of 17 noncleft children and 11 children with complete (alveolar, primary, and secondary) unilateral ...

This paper compares two methods to estimate the position of a mobile robot in an indoor environment using only odometric calculus and the WiFi energy received from the wireless communication infrastructure. In both cases we use a well-known probabilistic method based on the Bayes rule to accumulate localization probability as the robot moves on with an experimental WiFi map, and with a theoretically built WiFi map. We will show several experiments made in our university building to compare both ...

When testing a statistical mediation model, it is assumed that factorial measurement invariance holds for the mediating construct across levels of the independent variable X. The consequences of failing to address the violations of measurement invariance in mediation models are largely unknown. The purpose of the present study was to systematically examine the impact of mediator noninvariance on the Type I error rates, statistical power, and relative bias in parameter estimates of the mediated effect ...

Folliculitis decalvans and lichen planopilaris phenotypic spectrum has been described as a form of cicatricial alopecia. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical and trichoscopic features and therapeutic management of this condition in a series of patients. A retrospective observational unicentre study was designed including patients with folliculitis decalvans and lichen planopilaris phenotypic spectrum confirmed with biopsy. A total of 31 patients (20 females) were included. The most common ...

Histone H1 is an intrinsic component of chromatin, whose important contribution to chromatin structure is well-established in vitro . Little is known, however, about its functional roles in vivo . Here, we have addressed this question in Drosophila , a model system offering many advantages since it contains a single dH1 variant. For this purpose, RNAi was used to efficiently deplete dH1 in flies. Expression-profiling shows that dH1 depletion affects expression of a relatively small number of genes in ...

To investigate the mechanisms by which glutamate-induced acetylcholinesterase (AChE) release might play a part in the pathogenesis of excitotoxically triggered motor neurone disease, we measured AChE molecular forms released after glutamate-receptor agonist stimulation of superfused and incubated slices of mouse spinal cord. Kainate and GLU caused a dose-related, calcium-dependent, magnesium-blocked liberation of AChE soluble forms (mainly G4) from both the ventral and dorsal horns, without membrane ...

Mauritia flexuosa L.f. is a palm from the Amazon. Pulp and oil are extracted from its fruits, with a high content of bioactive compounds. This study presents the economic evaluation of two extraction processes: (a) Conventional solvent extraction (CSE) with 80% ethanol for the recovery of phenolic-rich extracts; and (b) Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) followed by CSE to obtain oil and phenolic-rich extracts. The objective of this study was to compare the feasibility of both extraction processes. ...

Antibody response against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) after mRNA or adenoviral vector-based vaccines is weak in kidney transplant (KT) patients. However, few studies have focused on humoral response after inactivated virus-based vaccines in KT. The study group was composed of patients from all KT centres ...

Metformin has been under basic and clinical study as an oncological repurposing pharmacological agent for several years, stemming from observational studies which consistently evidenced that subjects who were treated with metformin had a reduced risk for development of cancer throughout their lives, as well as improved survival outcomes when diagnosed with neoplastic diseases. As a result, several basic science studies have attempted to dissect the relationship between metformin’s metabolic mechanism ...

Numerous abnormalities of the peripheral blood T cell compartment have been reported in human chronic Trypanosoma cruzi infection and related to prolonged antigenic stimulation by persisting parasites. Herein, we measured circulating lymphocytes of various phenotypes based on the differential expression of CD19, CD4, CD27, CD10, IgD, IgM, IgG and CD138 in a total of 48 T. cruzi-infected individuals and 24 healthy controls. Infected individuals had decreased frequencies of CD19+CD27+ cells, which ...

Human–robot collaboration has gained attention in the field of manufacturing and assembly tasks, necessitating the development of adaptable and user-friendly forms of interaction. To address this demand, collaborative robots (cobots) have emerged as a viable solution. Deep Learning has played a pivotal role in enhancing robot capabilities and facilitating their perception and understanding of the environment. This study proposes the integration of cobots and Deep Learning to assist users in assembly ...

Nickel and iron supported on thermostable cellulose-derived carbon aerogels (CAG), were used for the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of crude and torrefied Eucalyptus globulus. Pyrolysis vapors produced from torrefied biomass under non-catalytic conditions were reduced by 70% in carboxylic acids with respect to vapors originating from crude biomass, but also were richer in ketones and aromatics. In the case of CFP of both crude and torrefied E.globulus on CAG-supported iron and nickel (Fe/CAG and Ni/ ...

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most fatal infectious diseases, caused by the aerobic bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis . It is estimated that one-third of the world’s population is infected with the latent (LTB) version of this disease, with only 5-10% of infected individuals developing its active (ATB) form. Pulmonary adenocarcinoma (PA) is the most common and diverse form of primary lung carcinoma. The simultaneous or sequential occurrence of TB and lung cancer in patients has been widely reported ...
