The purpose of this study is to examine the spontaneous interviewing skills of 43 newly recruited police officers (i.e., untrained recruits) with reference to the five stages of the internationally adopted PEACE model of interviewing (Preparation and planning; Engage and explain; Account, clarification and challenge [Account]; Closure; and Evaluation). University students acted as witnesses and watched a short video of a mock assault before being individually interviewed by one of the recruits. The ...

Jane Tudor-Owen,

Abstract The requirement for transparency and accountability for public spending has seen a focus on quantitative cost–benefit analyses. In the context of traffic policing, the temptation is to emphasize the importance of automated systems of enforcement as these pose an arguably less expensive alternative to using uniformed police. In the context of speed enforcement, automated means of enforcement are a logical way to efficiently distribute resources. However, in other areas of traffic policing, ...

We report on a long-term study of the flower preferences of feeding adult butterflies undertaken in the Wyre Forest, UK. Examination of 5638 observations of nectar-feeding clearly demonstrates several findings: (i) that butterflies differ in their range of flower use, some are generalists and others specialists, respectively, exploiting more or less sources than expected; (ii) certain flower species are preferred over others. We find that (iii) generalism and specialism in flower use corresponds to ...

Identifying and preventing miscarriages of justice is paramount; however, it is also imperative to consider what happens to exonerees after they have been exonerated in order to better inform their integration back into the community. The present study examines the influence of the type of evidence used to exculpate the accused, and the length of time spent in prison, on public perceptions of exonerees in Australia. The findings reveal that innocent and exonerated individuals are perceived differently ...

We present a model-based method for inferring full-brain neural activity at millimeter-scale spatial resolutions and millisecond-scale temporal resolutions using standard human intracranial recordings. Our approach makes the simplifying assumptions that different people's brains exhibit similar correlational structure, and that activity and correlation patterns vary smoothly over space. One can then ask, for an arbitrary individual's brain: given recordings from a limited set of locations in that ...

The early concepts concerning hematopoietic and epithelial stem cells that were derived from kinetic studies have been greatly enhanced by new information about a range of other properties of somatic and embryonic stem cells. Firstly, the stem and amplifying pattern characteristically established by epithelial lineages has been found to represent an intrinsic pattern that is generated by somatic epithelial stem cells without the need for additional environmental information. Secondly, it is now ...

Many studies have reported significant behavioral impact of physical activity interventions. However, few have examined changes in potential mediators of change preceding behavioral changes, resulting in a lack of information concerning how the intervention worked. Our purpose was to examine mediation effects of changes in psychosocial variables on changes in physical activity in type 2 diabetes patients.Ninety-two patients (62 ± 9 years, 30, 0 ± 2.5 kg/m(2), 69% males) participated in a randomized controlled ...

Owen Tudor, David T. Parkin,

Individual adult butterflies of the species Maniola jurtina vary in the number of subterminal spots on the undersurface of the hind-wing. The incidence of this spotting differs between the sexes, males usually having more spots than the females. The character shows a variable heritability, depending upon sex and temperature. Two adjacent populations were studied in Worcestershire between 1970 and 1974. Individuals were caught and marked, their spot number, size and subsequent capture were recorded. ...
