NEUROSURGERY STARTED IN Oxford in 1938. In this article, we commence the story of Oxford neurosurgery with Thomas Willis and trace the historical thread through William Osler, Charles Sherrington, John Fulton, and Harvey Cushing to Hugh Cairns. The department in Oxford is renowned for the training of neurosurgeons. The initial stimulus for this was the abundance of neurosurgical and neurological expertise in Oxford during World War II with Cairns, and this tradition continued with Joe Pennybacker ...

Experimental work on Polygonia c-album, a temperate polyphagous butterfly species, has shown that Swedish, Belgian, Norwegian and Estonian females are generalists with respect to host-plant preference, whereas females from UK and Spain are specialized on Urticaceae. Female preference is known to have a strong genetic component. We test whether the specialist and generalist populations form respective genetic clusters using data from mitochondrial sequences and 10 microsatellite loci. Results do ...

The laboratory rearing and biology of Stenolophus comma (F.) and S. lecontei (Chaudoir) (Carabidae) are described. The influence of temperature on oviposition, egg hatch, larval development and adult longevity was determined. Both species are primarily carnivorous but will feed on nonanimal food when animal food is not available. Feeding on corn seed in the field is influenced to a great extent by climatic conditions. Flight activity is based on temperature, with 20°, the minimum air threshold. Seasonal ...

The comma butterfly (Polygonia c-album, Nymphalidae, Lepidoptera) is a model insect species, most notably in the study of phenotypic plasticity and plant-insect coevolutionary interactions. In order to facilitate the integration of genomic tools with a diverse body of ecological and evolutionary research, we assembled the genome of a Swedish comma using 10X sequencing, scaffolding with matepair data, genome polishing, and assignment to linkage groups using a high-density linkage map. The resulting ...

The definition of comma-free codes is extended to be more comprehensive and include codes with variable length codewords and codes with an unlimited number of codewords. Finite state recognizers are used to represent commafree codes in a compact form, making available the well established methods of manipulating and analysing finite state models. An efficient algorithm is presented to test the comma-freeness of any given code represented by a finite state recognizer. It is well known, that any maximal ...

In the Lepidoptera, sex-linked genes have been found to be of importance for species differences in, for example, host-plant preference, and have been implicated in ecological speciation. Variation within species is typically not sex-linked. However, in the comma butterfly Polygonia c-album (Nymphalidae) an X-linked gene has been found to play a major role in determining differences in host-plant use between two well separated populations. For this reason, we studied the role of sex-linked genes ...

A method is presented, using finite state models, to design and investigate comma-free codes. The Scholtz method, which will produce maximal comma-free codes for odd fixed codeword lengths, is restated as an algorithm using finite state models. The algorithm is extended, taking advantage of finite state model techniques, to produce finite state generators from which families of comma-free codes in compact representation can be derived. The algorithm is further extended to allow for the design of ...

Stella Dudzic,

Abstract One in three people worldwide is overweight – and it is not just a problem of the developed world. The number of overweight and obese adults in the developing world has almost quadrupled since 1980 to around 1 billion, says a report from the Overseas Development Institute1. The increase was primarily in countries with rising incomes such as Egypt and Mexico. A shift from eating grains to more fats, sugar, oils and meat has been blamed. At the same time, millions, particularly children, are ...
