Whether bacterial vaginosis (BV) is acquired from an endogenous or an exogenous source is subject to controversy. Despite findings of an association between sexual behaviour and BV, some data indicate that BV is not a sexually transmitted infection in the traditional sense, while other data indicate that BV is an exogenous infection. A third aspect of BV is its tendency to go unnoticed by affected women. All of this will have a strong impact on how physicians view the risks of asymptomatic BV. This ...

Matthias Kolberg, Kari R. Strand, Pål Graff, K. Kristoffer Andersson,

Ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) is the enzyme responsible for the conversion of ribonucleotides to 2′-deoxyribonucleotides and thereby provides the precursors needed for both synthesis and repair of DNA. In the recent years, many new crystal structures have been obtained of the protein subunits of all three classes of RNR. This review will focus upon recent structural and spectroscopic studies, which have offered deeper insight to the mechanistic properties as well as evolutionary relationship and ...

The interstitial colloid osmotic pressure was measured by the "wick" method, and the interstitial hydrostatic pressure by the "wick-in-needle" method in subcutaneous tissue on thorax and leg. ... 3 was confirmed by northern analysis (Figure 5C). PAL siRNAs mostly aligned to the exons and matched predominantly to sense strands in the parents and most of the ILs. ... the PAL locus is from the similarity of PAL siRNAs in IL8-3 to endogenous ta-siRNAs (Peragine et al, 2004; Vazquez et al, 2004). Both are predominantly 21-nt, derived from both strands of a dsRNA precursor, and their alignment with their target nucleotide sequence is phased (Figure 6A). In addition, the target DNA sequences of PAL siRNAs are not methylated in IL8-3, suggesting ...

Abstract Background Baricitinib has shown efficacy in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, but no placebo-controlled trials have focused specifically on severe/critical COVID, including vaccinated participants. Methods Bari-SolidAct is a phase-3, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, enrolling participants from June 3, 2021 to March 7, 2022, stopped prematurely for external evidence. Patients with severe/critical COVID-19 were randomised to Baricitinib 4 mg once daily ...

A five-year, prospective, randomized follow-up study was done to compare three methods for repair of a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee: acute primary repair (Group 1), acute repair with a synthetic ligament-augmentation device (Group 2), and acute repair augmented with an autologous bone-patellar ligament-bone graft (Group 3). One hundred and fifty patients who had an acute rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament were randomized to one of the three repair groups, with fifty ...

Lars Engebretsen, Pål Benum, O Fasting, Anders Mølster, Torbjørn Strand,

Treatment of ACL tears is controversial. Recent reports on nonoperative treatment have shown poor results. Results after primary repair have deteriorated with time, leading to augmentation procedures that seem to have improved the results. However, there have been few prospective, randomized studies in this field. Our goal was to compare primary repair with a bone-patellar tendon-bone augmentation method and with a new method using the Kennedy Ligament Augmentation Device. One hundred fifty patients ...

The value of shared decision-making and decision aids (DA) has been well documented yet remain difficult to integrate into clinical practice. We wanted to investigate needs and challenges regarding decision-making about advanced lung cancer treatment after first-line therapy, focusing on DA applicability.Qualitative data from separate, semi-structured focus groups with patients/relatives and healthcare professionals were analysed using systematic text condensation. 12 patients with incurable lung ...

Abstract Background The Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) is frequently used to measure frailty in critically ill adults. There is wide variation in the approach to analysing the relationship between the CFS score and mortality after admission to the ICU. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of modelling approach on the association between the CFS score and short-term mortality and quantify the prognostic value of frailty in this context. Methods We analysed data from two multicentre prospective ...

Abstract Background Intensive care unit (ICU) patients age 90 years or older represent a growing subgroup and place a huge financial burden on health care resources despite the benefit being unclear. This leads to ethical problems. The present investigation assessed the differences in outcome between nonagenarian and octogenarian ICU patients. Methods We included 7900 acutely admitted older critically ill patients from two large, multinational studies. The primary outcome was 30-day-mortality, and ...
